From today's NYT: "Goldfish 'Title' to U. of P." From March 29, 1939. "A 20-year-old student from the University of Pennsylvania swallowed 25 live goldfish the previous evening, according to a report by The Associated Press that appeared in the Times. In doing so, he earned the title of champion at the intercollegiate "goldfish gulping" contest. The winner, Gilbert Hollandersky, a swimmer who went by Gill, bested his opponents by dunking the fish in ketchup and chasing it with orange juice. 'They're tasteless that way,' he said. The runner-up, a student from Harvard, swallowed 24 goldfish.
