It is always good to get back on this board. Nothing like having an intelligent discussion with like-minded people. Some very strange voting for the all ivy softball team. Most of the picks were fine, but there were a few question marks. Did Breille Wright have a better year than Alexis Guevara? Apparently, the coaches thought so as Breille was selected as the pitcher of the year. Breille is an excellent pitcher, but there is no way she is better than Guevara. I feel bad for this slight to Alexis as this is her senior year and Brielle is still a junior. In fairness to Brielle and the coaches who picked her, she had better numbers in the conference games, but not for all games. But this raises the question, do the non league games count at all. There is one other thing that should have been considered, Brielle, playing for Princeton, had a lot more support than Alexis. Many of Alexis' losses were of the 1-0 or 2-0 variety. In other words, support was always a question for Alexis.
Word came in today that Brown baseball coach Grant Achilles was let go. My reaction? Thank you, thank you, thank you. The only question I have is why did it take so long to get rid of him? He was good for winning 33% of his games. Since when is this acceptable? Achilles was elevated to head coach when Marek Drabinski suddenly quit. Grant went into the job with no head coaching experience and proceeded to demonstrate his ineptness. This is what happens when you don't do a thorough search for a head coach. The fault lies not with Achilles, but with the Brown administration for not doing things the right way. In the end, they paid for it with ten plus miserable years.
Getting back to softball, the Princeton coaching staff was voted the staff of the year. And Princeton did have a great year, but they were expected to. The rightful winner should have been Brown's first year H.C., Mary Holt-Kelsch. Holt-Kelsch turned a long playing disaster into a viable contender. Furthermore, her team won 30+ games for the first time since 1992. But there were so many other records set by the Holt-Kelsch team that there isn't space to list them all. And yes, I am a homer, but not selecting Holt-Kelsch is a joke, and not a very funny one.
Grace Calhoun was hired four years ago to raise the performance of Brown sports. To date, she is doing just fine with all of the women's sports. For the first time in 25 years, Brown is again competitive in virtually every women's sport. Sadly, I can not say the same for the men's programs. But I am confident it will get better. Grace was hired to get results, and she is. All of which leads me to believe that Coach Perry is on the hot seat and he knows it. Another year like last year, and he will be sent packing. It feels so good to finally see accountability in Brown sports.
