In reply to: Ed S. 's message, "FCS semifinals are set" on 11:52:50 12/14/25 Sun

I've never paid more attention to the FCS playoffs in my life. Welcome to the new world of being an Ivy League football fan.

And this is how it's going to be every year from now on. Some of us in the league will see our own team go forth and the rest of us can try to figure out what scenario is best for our conference.

Participation in the FCS tournament is all we needed to revitalize our football story.

I'm still hoping for an earlier start to the season, but that would be gravy. As I've said before, participation in the FCS playoffs will be another motivating factor to move up the start of the season. Why?

(1) It's now more important than ever that we schedule better OOC opponents. The only way to do that consistently is to be available when they are will to play us. That's early September.

(2) The romance of the end of the Yale-Harvard game taking place against the gloam of the setting sun to the west of the Yale Bowl is rapidly going to give way to our eight coaches realizing the following:

We only play ten games overall. Why not start the season the Saturday after Labor Day, give ourselves one bye halfway through the season and then give our champion another week to heal and prepare for the first round of the FCS playoffs? Everybody's more healthy and our champion has a better chance to advance.

Our ten-game season will go from an oddity to a competitive advantage. Start the Saturday after Labor Day.

Suppose the powers that be reward our advantageous ten-game season by discounting it by a sixth relative to the seasons of the other, twelve-game-playing FCS schools. Is it still advantageous if 9 and 1 League champs, year after year, wind up seedless?

Go to eleven. At least. If we're going to be part of the system, be part of the system.

And if we want to stay at ten, that's fine too. But everything has tradeoffs.

Yes! Ivies need to go to 11 games in order to maximize seeding and multiple bids. An earlier start to the season s the icing n the cake.
