Montana (#3 seed) vs Montana State (#2 seed)
Villanova (#12 seed) vs Illinois State

Illinois State has been the surprise team making it this far, not counting the fine effort that Yale displayed. Semifinal games are played next Saturday, December 20th.

I rooting for Villanova to make it to the finals. I want an Eastern team to play one of the Montana schools.

I've never paid more attention to the FCS playoffs in my life. Welcome to the new world of being an Ivy League football fan.

And this is how it's going to be every year from now on. Some of us in the league will see our own team go forth and the rest of us can try to figure out what scenario is best for our conference.

Participation in the FCS tournament is all we needed to revitalize our football story.

I'm still hoping for an earlier start to the season, but that would be gravy. As I've said before, participation in the FCS playoffs will be another motivating factor to move up the start of the season. Why?

(1) It's now more important than ever that we schedule better OOC opponents. The only way to do that consistently is to be available when they are will to play us. That's early September.

(2) The romance of the end of the Yale-Harvard game taking place against the gloam of the setting sun to the west of the Yale Bowl is rapidly going to give way to our eight coaches realizing the following:

We only play ten games overall. Why not start the season the Saturday after Labor Day, give ourselves one bye halfway through the season and then give our champion another week to heal and prepare for the first round of the FCS playoffs? Everybody's more healthy and our champion has a better chance to advance.

Our ten-game season will go from an oddity to a competitive advantage. Start the Saturday after Labor Day.

Suppose the powers that be reward our advantageous ten-game season by discounting it by a sixth relative to the seasons of the other, twelve-game-playing FCS schools. Is it still advantageous if 9 and 1 League champs, year after year, wind up seedless?

Go to eleven. At least. If we're going to be part of the system, be part of the system.

And if we want to stay at ten, that's fine too. But everything has tradeoffs.

Yes! Ivies need to go to 11 games in order to maximize seeding and multiple bids. An earlier start to the season s the icing n the cake.

The notion of “competitive equity” with other Ivy sports seemed to finally resonate with the League presidents and athletic leadership on FCS participation

These seem like reasonable ideas

Unfortunately, there are a lot of political and financial priorities and distractions for the Ancient Eight.

I agree with AO that we should move up the football season by two weeks for the following additional reasons. First, this provides more time off during the season for academic studies and for player injuries to heal. Second, the weather typically would be slightly nicer for our end of season rivalry games. Third, this would give our football players more time to prepare for fall semester final exams. Finally, there is ample precedent within our other Ivy team fall sports schedules.

Ivy soccer season commences the weekend of August 23rd and has six games scheduled before Saturday, Sept 13th.
Ivy water polo season commences the weekend of August 30th and has eight matches scheduled before Saturday, Sept 13th.
Ivy rugby season commences the weekend of August 30th and has two games scheduled before Saturday, Sept 13th.
Ivy volleyball season commences the weekend of Sept 6th and has four matches games scheduled before Saturday, Sept 13th.

Since virtually all sports programs start earlier, it is hard to come up with any reasons to delay the start of our football season to late September.

It's worth noting that, starting in 2026, the FCS season will actually start _before_ the FBS season does (excluding "Week Zero" games).

Going forward, FCS has 13 weeks to play 12 games, ending on the Saturday before Thanksgiving. That means FCS "Week One" is the last weekend in August (equal to FBS "Week Zero").

All the more reason for the Ivies to start earlier. For now, I'd be happy with moving up the start date one week and adding a bye. Starting two weeks earlier and finishing a week before Selection Sunday is also a good option. I would think the Ivy presidents wouldn't be terribly opposed to either approach. We can push for an 11th (or 12th) game later. Baby steps...

This game is for all intents over with 6 minutes left in the game. MSU blew the game open after scoring 21 4th quarter points.

Villanova can't do anything on offense. 27-6 now with Illinois State likely moving on to the championship game.

I hope MSU crushes the Redbirds, so that it will be apparent that Yale was the only team in these playoffs that hung with MSU all the way. That said, I think Illinois State is underrated - they looked really good against 'Nova. I note, btw, that Sagarin has Yale as the 13th-ranked FCS team, with MSU as #1.

Based on the Sagarin 12/20/25 rankings currently up, I still see NDSU at #1, with MSU as #2. Villanova #9, Lehigh #13, Yale #14.

You're right, Tenzac - I missed NDSU and bumped everyone else up one.
