I agree with the general concept that we need to reassess admissions criteria.

However, you are making some broad generalizations and assumptions. As the father of a Stuy student who is an avid downhill ski racer, I can tell you academic excellence and ski racing are mutually exclusive.

1. Downhill ski racing is an exacting sport that requires dedication, physical and mental strength. It requires discipline. While all sport at the highest levels requires mental toughness and grit, having seen it up close, ski racing really tests your ability to move past failures, learn from them and improve.

Each race happens in less than a minute and one tiny error in body movement or one lapse in remembering the course nuances correctly, can cost you 1st place or no place at all.

The world needs people with grit, intelligence and grace under pressure.

2. Harvard does not recruit 10 ski racers, only a few are truly athletic recruitment. And even those kids are phenomenal students and team mates.

3. Ski racing has a ton of scholarships and funding available. Yes it can get expensive when you really get serious about it, but most things get expensive.

I am not sure how this post is related to the University of Chicago, but we have covered the skiing topic in other posts.

As I recall the issue with Harvard & Dartmouth skiing is lack of any diversity and it's basically a rich kids only sport. Meaning the admission of those kids are probably more related to their parent's financial status rather than the student's academic and athletic achievements. Or at least that was my reading into the topic.
