... I think Yale should ask Nick Crawford to return his 1991 first-team All Ivy placement and give it to the second-teamer (sophomore Jay Fiedler).

Crawford had something like 25 passing yards all year (although he was a very effective I-Bone runner). And of course, Dartmouth was the 1991 undisputed Ivy champion.

What say you, Yale Nation?

1) Rushing stats are deservedly relevant when you're breaking all-time 1-AA QB rushing records and near the top of the national 61-AA rushing stats, regardless of position. Was Fiedler near the top of 1-AA passing stats in '91? I'll hang up and listen.

2) Fiedler won Ivy RoY that year. All-Ivy has always had a spread-the-love/everyone-gets-a-trophy mentality to it (more on that in a bit), so I suspect that it was a case of "there's two notable QB's, we can give the sophomore the Rookie award and the senior 1st team, and they both get to brag at their reunions."

3) On the "everyone gets a trophy" topic, it wouldn't shock me if this year's voters decided that since he's a sophomore, Reno will have more chances left to get gold stars on his forehead, so "let's give the spot to the junior instead."

4) Total Offense stats (takes both rushing AND passing into account) - Reno's total > Saunier's total.

5) Again - Saunier was the worst of all 8 starting QB's in passing efficiency. Second team All-Ivy? Good thing he set the FCS QB rushing record this year to make up for it. Oh, wait...

5) Maybe head-to-head was the only criteria considered. Saunier did win that by 1 point. Good thing performance vs. Brown wasn't the only criteria. ;-)

No Fiedler was not at the top of I-AA passing stats in 1991. But that's because Teevens made him hand the ball off a lot to I-AA rushing leader, First-Team All-American, and Bushnell Cup winner Al Rosier.

Between Rosier and Fiedler, Dartmouth had one of the best balanced offense attacks of all-time. Honestly, I can't even remember who our punter was that season...

But Fiedler could run. Indeed, I'd venture to say that he most likely had a higher yards per carry average than Crawford did.

In any event, enjoy your Thanksgiving!!!

Nice story about a great RB somehow making a QB worthy of an All-Ivy selection. Sounds a little like Pitsenberger and Reno, no? ;-)

Bottom line, my opinion of the All-Ivy team is -- and has been -- fairly low, for many years. Grade inflation and decisions of convenience seem to matter more than accurately recognizing the best of the best. It is what it is..

Enjoy your Thanksgiving, as well!

Looking forward to Saturday. I'm apprehensive about the outcomes, but am hoping that the league can show up the critics with a 2-0 result.
