For the longest time I felt The Ivy's by choice derived themselves of further national championships.up unitl 1968 The AP Poll awarded the national champions BEFORE the Bowls and The Coaches didn't follow until 1974. That means The Ivy's were national championship eligible despite their bowl ban. NCAA lists Princeton as one of the 1950 national champion. Throughout the 1960s there were numerous undefeated Ivys that weren't selected as Lambert Trophy Champion. That also dismissed the notion that The Ivys brand and heritage would give them the Notre Dame treatment.

During the 1940s New England teams declined Bowl invites over segregation laws. Yale and Dartmouth rejected tge 1925 Rose Bowl over "academics and competition inequality ". When Dartmouth declined The 1937 Rose Bowl Dartmouth President Ernest Hopkins said that this was a publicity stunt by Southern California. Bowl game apathy has been well set prior to the 1945 Ivy Gruop Pact.

Bowls were a rare invite during the 1950s For instance Michigan St had back to back undefeated seasons in 1952-53 with no Bowl. The 50's saw Oklahoma, Army, Virginia Tech and Texas A&M have undefeated seasons with no bowl bid.

Besides integration, the 1960s would've been the opptune time to end the bowl ban. Starting in 1961 the short lived Gotham Bowl having difficulty attracting participants. Ivy Champion Columbia , despite their 6-3 record would have been a perfect match. This game was held nearby. Another Bowl Ivy parhership could have been The Independence Bowl. This game was created in 1976 after 11-0 Arkansas State Southland Championship was left out. The Independence Bowl was begging for participants. They desired a Eastern team. Rutgers (11-0) rejected the 1976 Independence Bowl because they didn't want to go to a "inferior bowl" held in a "swampy backwater". They were hoping for the more prestigious Gator Bowl. It was Rutgers "soft schedule " that included four Division 2 wins that caused the major Bowls to overlook them.

The Garden State Bowl (1978-81) struggled to get off the ground. This game like the Independence Bowl wanted to correct what happened to undefeated Rutgers. This game wanted to showcase Eastern teams. The $150,000 payout would have been lucrative for The Ivy League.
This bowl liquidated the time the league dropped to The Division 1AA.

The post season ban wasn't as severe as I initially thought. Had the Ivy revised this illogical policy in the 1960s would've advanced the league. Perhaps a bowl would have been formed to reward our confence champion like the Independence Bowl. Maybe the league participated in Bowls their would've have been more Lambert Trophys.

The zenith of this policy didn't truly srart the bleeding unit 1982.

I'm glad to see the Ivy now the the potential to be restored to the national stage. Another time we should critique the potential outcomes had the Ivy accepted The 1AA playoffs starting in 1982-2024.
