Subject: Question for board members

I recently watched Brown men's basketball play URI. Of the URI players, there was only one player who was on the team last year. The other 13 came from the portal. As I understand it, this is true for many colleges. The question is this, how does a team full of carpetbaggers affect fan interest? Personally, I would have a hard time rooting for a team of newcomers because I don't get the sense that they have any interest in the school. I think they are just looking for another place to play. But that is me. I am curious as to how others feel about this.

I suspect many college fans feel like this.

I have been watching and rooting for Michigan since the days of Cazzie Russel and Bill Buntin in the '60s. Today's M team starts 4 transfers. I watch as a matter of curiosity. I think I can identify half of the team members. That's it.

The corollary is that college team rosters have always turned over much more frequently than professional teams. And yet fandom of college sports is considered more rabid than that of pro teams.

People are used to new faces in college every year. There haven't been 4-year starters on most major college teams for a long while. Those who have shown the ability to succeed during their freshman season have always left early (in hoops) and red shirt sophs declare for the NFL draft. Syracuse fans remember Carmelo Anthony fondly, even though he didn't wear the laundry very long. Columbia still adores Lou Gehrig. He didn't wear that laundry very long either.

And its not like the kids in the stands have much of a personal relationship with the guys on the court, either. They are "classmates" in theory only.
