Subject: A Great Game, no, not The Game

Brown and Dartmouth played a great game this afternoon, with Brown emerging a 35-28 winner. It was the first time Brown has beaten Dartmouth in many years.

There was no quit in either team, and the game went down to the last two minutes. The key to the game was Brown's ability to shut down Dartmouth's running game. This forced Dartmouth to pass, and while they did pass effectively, the D QB threw some untimely intercepts.

Brown both ran well and passed well. Yet D was able to stuff the run on numerous occasions. Murphy, the B QB maybe the most gifted QB in the league. He has an arm like a cannon and is mostly right on target. However, he is also prone to intercepts. He needs to see the field better and learn to get rid of it when no one is open. But when he is on, he is excellent.

Some post game thoughts:

1. Brown actually outplayed Dartmouth. There was nothing fluky about it. It reminded me of Brown's early season game against URI.

2. As a Browm alum I felt good about the win because of all the adversity we have faced for the last 10 years. I particularly felt good for the players, especially the seniors, who can now move forward with their lives knowing that they have moved the Brown program along.

3. And perhaps I shouldn't say this, but I will because controversy is more interesting than platitudes. I am glad because Go Green is probably sad. I have nothing against GG personally but in the last few weeks all he saw was Dartmouth ending the year 8-2. The thought of Brown winning never entered his head. Worse, he was totally contemptuous of Brown, and he didn't hide his feelings.

4. I wish all of today's players, both Brown and Dartmouth, the best. They played their hearts out and put forth a great college football game. And, yes, I would have said that even if Brown lost.

Brown started hot at 3-1, including a big win over ranked URI, then lost 4 in a row, including a game that it played not to lose against Cornell, and then won its last 2. Brown showed a lot more on defense this year compared to last year, and hopefully improvement will continue. Offensively, as GBI points out, Murphy has a really nice arm and actually moved better than I thought possible given his size. The running game appeared and disappeared at various points during the season, though Brown never lost a fumble on offense.

Perry clearly learned from the Cornell loss, passing on 3d down, with a lead, in the 4th quarter when necessary against Columbia and Dartmouth. If we had kept throwing a bit more against Cornell with a lead in the 4th quarter, we would have won that game as well.

There clearly are some building blocks for next year. Hope springs eternal.

We have probably seen our last Ivy title for another ten years.

No knock on Coach McCorkle, but just seeing signs of slippage all over the place.

Hope I am wrong.

If anything recruiting has improved under McCorkle. We've got some "highly touted" guys in the pipeline waiting their turn.

If you want to criticize McCorkle, ask him why the team doesn't play better on the road.

To the program’s credit, Dartmouth recruiting has been more professionalized/more resources dedicated for sure, and all of the IL programs are now landing guys they wouldn’t have gotten just a few years ago due mostly to the portal/roster management, but otherwise it’s TBD just as it always has been - an educated projection/guess based on physical measurables, game film and character assessment. I recall clearly on how some saw the D ‘21 first year guys - the Covid class - as being a weak recruiting class. Those guys all have three rings - two of which were earned as juniors and seniors - many legit contributors. The football graveyard is littered with the headstones of guys who were “highly touted” who began to believe their own hype and then don’t execute in the moment.

It's easier to win with guys who were highly touted than with guys nobody else wanted.

That's a big reason why Dartmouth was so lousy in the late 1990s to 2009. In those days, we were thrilled to get a recruit who also had an offer from (say) Army. Now, we pretty much expect that our recruits had multiple offers from competitive school teams.

Yes - maybe- assuming they’re not overrated…I want it to be that simple too, but you of all people know that a lot of guys just don’t fill those shoes when they actually step on the field and face D1 speed and execution, and, a lot of guys are underrated and therefore not highly recruited but nevertheless kill it when they get their opportunity- outshining the (maybe) three stars who were supposed to be the guy - hunger combined with a chip on the shoulder does that. Those Dartmouth no-star ‘21s are a legit example.

That freshman RB Craddock who got more yards than Crowther against Brown?

He had an offer from BC.

And he's got classmates with comparable credentials.

Time will tell, but yes it was great to see Craddock begin to step into the featured back role.

I agree somewhat on this Hanover. But I also see much more parity in the league than over before. Any team in the Ivy League is capable of beating the other.

This is classic over reaction. Hat tip to Brown for sure, but the reality is that Dartmouth did not play a clean game - constantly in third and long on offense, letting Brown hang around by virtue of four turnovers, and a clearly improved Brown team (especially the defense which stopped the D run more effectively than anyone would have predicted going into the game) stepped up and made the most of the opportunities they were given. This one stung for Dartmouth and it should - hopefully it will serve as motivation going into the off season.

Definitely hat tip to Brown - they won it - but the original post made me laugh a little:

"Some post game thoughts: 1. Brown actually outplayed Dartmouth. There was nothing fluky about it." - Grin and Bear It

In all the excitement, Grin surely deserves grace for his assessment.
'Cause some key stats:
................Dartmouth...Brown
First downs .......21........16
Rushing ..........112........82
Passing...........274.......222
Possesion........34:45.....25:15
3rd down %.......8of16.....5of12

Now we all know that in the end, only the score matters. But the three turnovers in the 4th quarter (including the game-winning 74-yd PICK6) just killed Dartmouth. Kudos that Brown did what they needed to do, but yeah it was a little fluky. Hopefully Brown will continue its march towards league relevance again, but this was as much a Dartmouth fail as anything. And doubly hard to take, with New Hampshire being the last at large team into the FCS field.

When teams fail, it is generally the result of the other team's efforts. For example, when a QB is under pressure and throws an interception, it is usually because he is off balance or is unable to get his feet planted...all of which are a result of the pressure. The other aspect of the game that Brown did well was stuff the Dartmouth run. Was this a failure of Dartmouth's offensive line? Perhaps, but it could also be a result of the play of Brown's defensive line.

I am not familiar with the poster, but he, no doubt, is a Dartmouth follower, and like GG has a condescending attitude. According to said poster, Brown could never beat Dartmouth unless Dartmouth beat itself. Not true, I saw the game and Brown won because they outplayed D. Earlier in the season B outplayed URI and URI went undefeated in their conference, is ranked in the top 10, and is in the playoffs. Brown was inconsistent. I am not sure why...but they were also capable of good games.

Wow such harsh words toward Dartmouth team. They played 4 teams that made the playoffs and beat 3 of them. Brown D played great. While the D QB was pressured, he also tried to make some passess that just were poor decisions. But that's not to take away from the Brown D. At least he was going for the win and not playing to "not lose", like we have at times been guilty of. All in all a very good season. It is not easy to win consistently in the IL and D has done it well. Looks like Brown and Penn are back, too. Don't know what happened to Columbia this year. We all need to just beat up on Harvard and Yale!
