Never saw a game with so many flags - also worrisome that chase our Texas qb knocked out of game but Caleb Sanchez came on and did well ! We won despite some errors - eg too many men on field - roughing kicker etc! But we’ll take the W !

We have a lot of work to do on offense. The passing game needs work—Goodwin and his receivers are not yet in sync. The OL is not opening up holes for the running backs. On the bright side the first year RB, Walter’s, is a load and is now the #1 back as far as I can tell. The kicking game also needs work—two awful shanked punts, a missed PAT, and a kickoff out of bounds. As far as the defense, which was our calling card last season, the pass defense has been generally sound but the run defense needs to step up. PS, the targeting call on Newton was unjustified and puts him on the bench for the first half against Princeton.

Good point about Newton - that sucks if he is out for first half of Princeton - FWIW - there was the same call vs G/town when Goodwin QB was knocked out the game - but the call was reversed.

Totally agree with you Old Lion - your age makes you a savvy football analyst -- hopefully Poppe and crew can make adjustments. From my perspective it is good to play aggressively but if it leads to foe drives continuing - such as our roughing the kicker we have to fix that. Kicking game was a nailbiter as well - one snap was almost fumbled but a miss is as good as a mile.

One other point on defense—we seemed to have difficulty getting off the field on third downs; it seemed like we had Georgetown at third and long and somehow containment broke down (QB scrambles), the RB found the edge, or they completed a pass. On most occasions we seemed to hold up well on 1st and 2nd downs but softened up on 3rd and long.

Columbia's two freshman running backs, Michael Walters and Jamal Pitcher, are special. The freshman wide receiver, Caden Butler, is also very good. Coach Poppe is smart to get them on the field in the first two games of the season.

let me admit it; I hate night games. This old man would otherwise have driven to the game but is now about to drive back at5 10:30 or so. College football is Saturday afternoons!

lol yes too far to go to Princeton for a night game on Friday - I agree -- if you live near campus they are having a viewing party at Amity Hall -- free of course with some free snacks - but for a person who does not want to pay for ESPN it is a good deal!

Looking forward to Friday night. Both Princeton and Columbia need this Ivy opener. Loser faces a very difficult road to recovery.

Jake finally took a long overdue step to address the inane anonymous comments on his blog by moving it to Substack and requiring users to sign in. The straw that seemed to have broken the came’s back was either the derogatory ad hominem attacks on users, players and coaches, or the bogus “movement” to bring back Mark Fabish.

Bagnoli had serious surgery during the winter before the 2024 season. He fully intended to coach for the 2024 season. Whether he intended to make 2024 his last season or not is open to speculation, but after his surgery while recuperating he came to realize that he was physically unable to put himself through another season. The speculation that this was a carefully staged Machiavellian plot to hand the job to Mark is baseless. And let’s remember that Mark was named interim head coach, with a heavy emphasis on the word interim.

Wow - just got done with Jakes blog reading all the pro Fabish (the previous Columbia ingterim coach) comments - what a pile of BS! They are trolls - nothing more - probably from another school or just idiots. I think Jake does a great job - and honestly I would just take down any post that advocates nonsense about the previous coach.

That said, I also wondered why Bagnoli quit the team just before the season started - to ensure his guy Fabish was made the interim head coach? No doubt Columbia admins felt they were gamed - I had respect for Bags up until he did that, even if it was for health reasons - but you have to think he had an inkling he could not reasonably coach. I did not think kindly of Bags while he was at Penn - let's not forget that his coaches openly harrassed and denigrated our players - I expect hazing from players possibly - but coaches?

I'm sure back in the day Ivy coaches happily filled in a W before they played us - no doubt there is some kind of animosity towards us, and desire for the old days of Columbia futility.

If Fabish had put up a better season -- he might have been kept on - but he did not! Results matter in football and everywhere else for that matter. It could be that the success Poppe had last year was a fluke - but Fabish had the same players from Bags' crew and he could not get it done.
