Why is Jace Eveland a three star when his best non-Ivy offer is Portland State?

I've said many times-- I trust the opinions of the coaches a lot more than the opinions of the recruiting services.

Numerous "bigs" including Syracuse and Oregon/Oregon State appear to have been very interested in Jace early last year, and he was overall the 17th highest ranked football player in the State of Oregon. Jace was offered by Syracuse, and visited other bigs. I may be wrong, but Jace appears to have become very interested in the Ivy League schools and was offered by at least Harvard, Princeton and Dartmouth. Columbia then entered the picture and Jace was offered by Columbia and accepted with a very nice on-line statement that he found his new home. I suspect that the Columbia Coaching Staff is thrilled to have their outstanding Lion. His younger brother, another strongly sought after football player,is a high school sophomore.

Thought the count was only based on 4-year running tally of enrollees. Whether they never show up for first practice or transfer after being named POY as a sophomore they still count against your total

Is total allowed per IL rules down to 108 for 4 years?

In the most recent podcast from Jake, an interview with Coach Poppe, an interesting fact emerged: Coach tells recruits that no matter how good they are, they will not see the field for more than 4 games during their first year. In that way, they can preserve a redshirt PG year after they play their senior seasons for us and do not need to transfer if they want to play for a major D1 program after they finish their Columbia careers. That to me shows great consideration for recruits and first year players who want to go ivy but still would like a crack at a major program after they get their Columbia degrees.

Flip side. If they are clearly better players than other players on the roster, then the coach isn't putting the best players on the field to win games.

I think coach is taking the long view. Hold out first years until the last 4 games of the season—give them time to get used to the college game. and how many first years are ready to play right away anyway. Otherwise you don’t get the senior year out of really top flight guys who feel as if they have to transfer in order to showcase their NFL potential.

If I recall correctly, what the coach said is that he hasn't and wouldn't play a first year player more than 4 games unless first discussed with the parents and player. However, the 4 game rule does not apply to any post-season games, so a first year could play 4 regular season games, then play in a post-season and yet retain his eligibility for a 5th year.

It's mind bending how much more complicated college coaching has become with NIL, the transfer portal, having to be cognizant of the 4 game rule etc. etc.

I applaud the coach's forthrightness. But I would expect that any player who thinks he is good enough to play a lot as a freshman would elect to go elsewhere.

Assume that the last 4 games of a season are Cornell, Brown, Harvard and Yale. Assume that 3 of the first 4 games are non-league games. Then if a first year is ready to contribute in a major way he could be used for our 3 most formidable opponents (H,Y,D) plus one other game and held out of the rest. Or just play him in the last 4 games of the season, when he should be more acclimated to college ball.

This is a price Ivy football pays in the current world. If Dr. V is correct, then post-season play does not count to the 4 games. But I think JV games do count, for the schools that still play a few of these a season anymore. if any still do.

But here is another question: suppose a kid is induced to go Ivy after the HC promises to play him no more than 4 games as a freshman and keeps his promise. This preserves the kid's ability to get his Ivy degree and a grad year elsewhere. And then a year or two later into his Ivy career, the kid decides he wants to transfer before his Ivy degree after all and get more years (and presumably consideration) playing elsewhere. What stops him from doing so? Nothing.

The current situation in "amateur" college athletics is more freewheeling than pro sports. In the latter, a team can sign you to a multi-year contract. College kids are free agents every year. The NCAA may have put a limit on the number of transfers a kid can make without sitting out a year, but that is a limited restriction to me.

I am fine with letting players (the market) decide when to stay/go. If the allure of big-time money is more than the long term value of an IL degree so be it

I really do think the oppty to play a post grad year is a unique and valuable feature of Ivy football. It is hard for recent grads in the job market right now. Would much rather be trying to land something with a Columbia degree and network to leverage than FBS U degree should the nfl pipe dream not work out

As I have pointed out before the IL has no say on transfers (out) or NIL payouts to student athletes. And at least a few are not adverse to bringing in a transfer via the portal after one year elsewhere

This may or may not be so, I don't know. Maybe it will happen down the road. But my larger, unstated point is, as a practical matter, in my opinion, it is currently very unlikely to happen. If Notre Dame, say, asked for a 4 year contract, the kid can turn to another school to preserve his flexibility. It will be interesting to see if any school seeks to be the first or first few to try this; right now it is not happening as far as I know.

"Wisconsin: A two-year revenue-sharing agreement exists, utilizing a Big Ten-issued template form, though a specific player, Xavier Lucas, has opted to leave without entering the transfer portal despite being bound by this agreement.

Duke: Duke quarterback Darien Mensah has a two-year deal valued at $4 million per year.

BYU: Basketball star AJ Dybantsa had an approximate asking price of $5 million before signing with BYU, though the duration of that specific agreement is not explicitly stated in the provided text.

Texas Tech: Five-star offensive line prospect Felix Ojo has a three-year deal averaging $775,000 annually with a verbal understanding that Texas Tech will renegotiate up to $5 million.

USC: JuJu Watkins, a women's basketball star, has agreed to a multiyear contract extension with Nike, which is described as one of the richest shoe endorsement deals in women's basketball.

North Carolina: Freshman Caleb Wilson has reportedly signed a multi-year and multimillion-dollar shoe deal with New Balance."

As with other pro teams (no pun here), there are risks to both parties in signing such agreements (player: injury risk; team: performance risk). Who knows what will develop, and we can certainly look forward to more litigation, but my bet would be a path that mirrors traditional pro sports franchises.
