The University of Minnesota will hire Ball State coach Brenda Oldfield as women's basketball coach, the Star Tribune has learned.
The university has called a news conference for 3 p.m. today at the Sports Pavilion. Officials would not confirm Oldfield's hiring and Oldfield could not immediately be reached.
Oldfield was 35-22 in two seasons at Ball State. The Cedar Rapids, Iowa, native was the top assistant at Iowa State for four years before being hired at Ball State.
With the Cyclones, Oldfield was in charge of recruiting and responsible for high school athletes in Minnesota. Among the notable athletes she recruited to Iowa State is Megan Taylor of Roseau, the all-time leading scorer in Minnesota prep history.
She was the Mid-American Conference coach of the year in 2000, when she coached Ball State to a 16-13 record.
The university fired Cheryl Littlejohn May 14 after four seasons, when an investigation determined she committed 12 NCAA violations.
Oldfield played collegiately at Arizona, where she was a three-year starter for the Wildcats. Her sister, Stacy Frese, played for the Utah Starzz of the WNBA last season.
