Good to hear your thoughts Doug. Firstly I like both eras of the series, and for many different reasons, yes the black and white shows were funnier and probably better or more realistically written. But the Color episodes were just as well written and the natural progressions made of all the characters really was "the glue" for me. With the exception of Mike and Sally's Wedding (and then never being referred to again) and Ernie's adoption, the continuity in the trials and tribulations of the Douglas family made it more believable and it seemed they were a real family to most of us growing up, and to dissect it too much would be to shatter our perceptions of an enduring and much loved part of television history.
In regards to why Peter Brooks and Ricky Allen left the show I can only speculate, but I believe Brooks was given a plum supporting role in the 1963 movie "Hud" starring Paul Newman and Patricia Neal, and for a few years after that he played supporting roles in a variety of comedy films.
Ricky Allen's departure could possibly have been instigated with the original arrival in the neighbourhood of Chip's new friend Ernie Thompson, who we all know, was adopted into the family two seasons later. Interestingly, while Brooks never appeared on a Color episode, Allen did as a country bumpkin named Hoby Prouty in the episode "The Good Earth" from 1967. In this classic show, Uncle Charley buys a vacation lot in Whispering Pines, only to learn he;s been hoodwinked in a high pressure real estate operation.
