Hey J,

Congrats! This is a great time to be looking at boats (lot of good cheap boats out there) and a great time to get "unplugged" from the increasing unstable systems of modern day suburban life. Speaking from experience, also great to have a woman whose "luxury-meter" is calibrated to backpacking not the Ritz Carleton. :-) Seriously, we have a tendency to focus on the future and think doom and gloom. But as I sit here enjoying coffee and oatmeal prepared on Macha's kerosene stove, I can't help but reflect that if this unfolding economic shitstorm has led indirectly to me living with the woman of my dream on the boat of my dream, then it ain't all bad...

Anyways, digressions aside, I would second Adam's suggestions and book recommendation.

Also...

Check out craigslist where you live. Especially, if you search for "Atomic 4", I bet you'll find a bunch of solid, weatherly classics with blown engines going for a song.

In other words, rather than thinking "what is the ideal boat for my needs" and then trying to find one at a reasonable price, start out looking for "diamonds in the rough."

Out here in San Francisco area, I'm regularly seeing "classic plastic" in the size range you mentioned for $5,000 to $10,000.

Oh yeah, also, I think your instinct to want good performance is right on. No one wants to sail an slow unweatherly pig -- ESPECIALLY engineless!

- Ari
