First off, my boat. Pearson Commander (around 26 feet) with outboard well in stern counter, typical main and jib sail plan, roller furling genoa. I have two cleats on the outboard side of the combing that are located athwartships with the end of the tiller. I have a block tied to a line that hitches to the windward cleat. A line rove thru the block hitches to a fall of the mainsheet. The other end of the roved line hitches to the end of the tiller. Another line with a bowline tied on one end has the shock cords (3 of 3/16" cord) looped to the bowline. This line with shock cord hitches to the leeward cleat. Loop as many shock cords over the end of the tiller as required to balance the sheet load. Then it's a matter of adjusting lines until she holds a course. With the keel design of the Commander, she holds her way pretty well. I still have much to learn about this method of self steering, but I've been satisfied with the results so far.
