Absolutely. The boats you generally find in the $1 a lb and below category will need a lot of work. They almost always will have blown engines, ratty sails, and dubious standing and running rigging. If you don't need an engine then right away you save $5000 to $15,000 on systems, but your sails will need to be all the better. If you sew your own sails and cut down or repair decent used ones you could easily save 50% or more over the cost of new. In any case you must reserve enough money to make the boat acceptable for your use after you buy it.
