Heavy Weather Sailing by Adlard Cole is the best I've ever read on this subject. Used copies can usually be found. In my previous boat, a cutter, I once reefed down to a double reefed main and a reef in the already diminutive staysail in cold windy conditions while sailing alone. In my current boat - neither a true cutter or sloop - in fact a solent rigged Alberg 37, my last sail up would be the double reefed main. Thankfully I've never had to do that. On the other hand, the previous owner set up a dedicated storm main track and a stay wire (not attached at present) for a storm jib. I have both sails but hope never to use them!
