Subject: motersailer to real sailor, by accident

I have looked over this site and read some of the tidbits of jeromes books. I have thought the engineless sailing is something that I would like to move towards for both envieonmental reasons and to give myself more freedom. I am now paret way into a voyage that has turned me into an engineless sailer.

I was leaving scotty bay, lasquiti where i keep my boat anchored. I had doughts about my 4hp mercury outboard, my bottem wasnt perfect I had held my breath acouple times to dive an get the muscles, I missed a few. I aked my friend kenny if he had any long oars to spare unfortunately he only had a 7 ft oar I took it along.
there was a northwest forcasted that would push me down to naniamo the wind was forcasted to pick up around noon. I powered around the top of lasquiti and started to make my way down the staright of georgia my outboard woulod peeter out and quit every so often and I would pull away to get it going again. when I got just passed bellenus the out board decided it wouldnt start again. It was just afternoon and it was still dead calmI pulled up the sails and started to go nowhere. I tried pulling the boat with my canoe and there was still little progress. around 5pm my father who was my ever payient crewman pulled out his blackberry and called the nearest marina schooner cove they kinly came and picked us up. The following day The northwest had finally picked up and we left the marina sailed through the narrow break water and had a wonderfull cruise down to naniamo.

In naniomo I had my boat hulled out and I realized the bottem was still far from perfect I cleaned her painted her and replace a through hull valve that was siezed open. I had my engine running again by a local mechanic.
When I had her put back in the water the outboard wouldnt start I pulled for hours only to get 300 ft on a short burst to the end of the dock. I decided i needed oars I made one from a windsurfer mast I was given that fit perfectly around the 7ft oar my friend had given me and a I found a single used lifeboat oar at a collecters shop. I also a bought a 30 lb thrust trolling moter which is just a novelty because I only have the battery pwer to run it for an hour and I can go faster with my oars.

I Left naniomo haeded for pirates cove decourcy alone and it was blowing 20-25 I was running under just the main with one reef and the wind behind me I made false narrow at high tide and I was scared shitless while going through. Once I reached the far side and I was more Alive than I had ever been. I sailed into pirates cove, decourcy Island and dropped the hook the only down side was that the guy in the power boat nexst to me had the two shirtless girls, they say the bad guy always wins.

I went from decourcy to gabroila on a calm day and here I am waiting out a gale force northly that I resisted the urge to take down to saltspring.
