I've sewn all types of projects on my boat. The machine is a 1937 Singer. An older friends mother gave it to me 5 years ago and is trilled it's getting used again. The key is new needles, mine will go thru 6 layers of sunbrella no problem.

I've bought sail kits from sailrite and am happy with there service. I'd suggest building some bags, sail cover, sail bag, cushion covers, before building the sail.
Good Luck
