Neil,

Ah man, I'm not an expert. I've "inherited" one sculling oar but never built one.

My hunch is that length will be determined by some combo of the boats freeboard and your height.

The length/weight of the boat doesn't come into the sizing, except that you'll need a thicker oar to move a heavy boat.

Take this with a grain of salt as I am an oar user not an oar designer! :-)
