Subject: Getting started.

Hi, I just wondered how I can incorporate this engineless idea into my learning to sail. I am an old dude, 62 coming up 63, and my main question is, now I have a 26 footer fixerupper, do I get the engine running 'just in case' or should I get some oars, plug the tube, and learn to manage with no engine right from the start. I have never sailed a keel boat in my life. YET.
Bear in mind my limited stamina and balance. I am assuming the balance will definitely improve, and the stamina somewhat improve as I proceed. Oh, and I am not into paying megabux just to be taught how to sail.
I can play billiards/pool, I figure the wind/sail is a similar (basic) issue, just figuring angles, and being aware. In this case EXTREMELY aware. I have long figured that if I was dumped on board a sailboat in mid-ocean, I could get it to the shore. But, like in the text on this site says, I might find the last part into port a bit too tricky.
Any ideas welcome,
John
