Hi
Byron
I'm in Adelaide, S.Aus. and I do research for people who require information from our records here regarding ancestors who came here from overseas. I saw your message on the VoyUser site, and decided to see what I could find
when I was in the library yesterday. Regrettably, I am not able to answer your query as you would like.

Geake is no a common name here. I checked all the ships passenger lists for a record of your Ernest George Rowland but without luck. In 1859 a Frank R. Geake, Harry J. Geake and Johanna Geake arrived in S.Aus.

In 1855 a John Geake, Mary Geake and William Geake arrived in South Australia.

A Mary Geake arrived in S.A. 1852.

These are all the Geake arrivals we have here. Unfortunately we do not have passenger lists for every ship came here. Quite a number of passenger lists were never handed in when the ship arrived in S.Aus.

However, we do have records of the birth of children during the voyage. There is NO child with the surname Geake recorded as being born during any voyage to South Australia. I'd be rich if I had a dollar for every person who has asked me to look for the same request. It seems to be a "popular" theme to suggest an ancestor was born during the voyage to South Australia.

The following children are the only two born to John geake and sarah Ann Gregory.

1. Arthur Maujrice born 3rd December 1883 Balaklava, District Gilbert ref. b317 p58

2. Ernest George Roland born 19th December 1881 Balaklava,Dis. Gilbert ref b274 p248

The birth record of any child born during voyages in those days always contained the notation "born at sea aboard .................ship, arriving S.A.."

I'm sorry to disallusion you, but that's what the records show.

Please don't hesitate to get back to me if there is anything else you would like me to look for. I'm a Salvo Chaplain working in an Aged care facility where all of the patients have some form of dementia, so I try to get to the library every week to do research, as it helps me regain my "sanity".

Regards
Heather
