Nikita sat in the passenger seat of the sedan they had rented from Dulles International Airport. They were now heading towards Griffith, Virginia. It was near a state park named Douthat, but they wouldn’t go into the park nor would they do nothing more than drive thru Griffith.

Nikita watched the scenery go by as Michael drove. She rubbed her stomach and looked at Michael. “You know that we aren’t heading to the cemetery.”

“Because that is in Petersburg, Virginia,” Michael replied as he didn’t even look over at his wife. Nikita closed her eyes for a moment and then swallowed. “We have to retrieve something at this location… I’m giving it up and we have to turn things off.”

“But it isn’t that big of a place. Or we would have gotten a larger vehicle. What is there? A laptop and some cameras?” Michael asked as he continued to focus on the road in front of him.

“Pretty much,” Nikita answered with a heavy sigh as she thought about what was there.

Madeline’s diaries.

Nikita didn’t understand why she wanted them now. Those that she had even dared to glance at while she was Operations had seemed to cause big gaping wounds into her heart. She wasn’t even sure if she wanted to read them. But she wanted them and knew that this was the first step to moving on in her life, in her new life with Michael and their family.

“Kita?” Michael called out some time later and Nikita jerked. “What?”

“You told me to drive thru Griffith… we’ve just done that,” Michael spoke as he slowed the car down and pulled the car to the shoulder of the road. “Maybe we should have stopped at that McDonalds. We could have had some food and spent some time out of the car. We've been sitting for a long time day.”

Nikita looked around and could see the turn wasn’t far away. “We won’t be here long.”

“Maybe you needed a break because I don’t think you’ve heard me talking for some amount of time,” Michael pointed out as he turned to face her. “Are you going to tell me more about this place?”

“The turn is just beyond those trees there. That right hand turn,” Nikita looked at the trees and then looked at Michael. “I just want this over, Michael.”

“I want to know what I’m walking into. I want to know that you haven’t spent the past forty minutes in a PTSD flash,” Michael firmly spoke as he was regretting taking this trip alone with Nikita. Walter had offered to come up behind them, as there was another flight into Dulles just a half hour behind them. Mick offered to travel with them. Even Beatrice had offered.

“I wasn’t in a flash,” Nikita firmly declared as she looked back at the trees. “I didn’t say that this trip was going to be fun, Michael.”

“I don’t want it to make things worse, Kita.”

“We haven’t even started,” Nikita huffed as she turned her head. “If you are that afraid of what is in that house… then take us back now. Don’t to and make that right hand turn up there. Make a U-turn and go back to Dulles.”

Michael turned the car back on and started to move back out onto the empty road. Nikita couldn’t tell what he was going to do and when he got to the turn, he turned right. He got onto the road and shook his head. “This road is barely paved, Kita.”

“We won’t be on it long,” Nikita replied and Michael shook his head. “This can’t be good for you and the baby.”

“Do you see that cabin up there? The one with the For Sale sign in front of it. That’s where you stop,” Nikita hissed at her husband as she grabbed the keys from her purse. He had barely stopped the car before she had stepped out.

“Kita…”

“There has been a population explosion in Griffith… a teacher who was just hired by the school wants to tour the cabin to be her home. I want to make sure that it is empty,” Nikita grumbled as she walked up the sturdy steps as Michael slammed his car door shut.

Nikita was inside the cabin as Michael came up the stairs. She had already deactivated the alarms and she glanced around the small cabin with her eyes. Its open concept and small loft above the main floor made it that simple to clear with a visual inspection from the door. She stepped to the side and looked at the counter in the kitchenette area and then looked at Michael. “Do you mind turning that off and taking the two cameras down from the corner eaves? I don’t think you want your pregnant wife on a ladder.”

Nikita went to the side and walked up the small flight of stairs to the loft. There was no bed up there. Just a large wooden and leather trunk. She pushed the dust off of it and opened up the trunk, looking into the diaries.

Madeline’s handwritten diaries.

Nikita could just close the lid from the trunk and leave them here. The new owner would probably just throw them away or take them as some tortured writer’s bad attempts at a series of books.

But Nikita wasn’t absolutely sure. She didn’t read them all. Hell, she barely even skimmed the few that she dared to open. Nothing on the outside indicated what time period they were from and Nikita swallowed hard as she sat back and slapped the trunk. “You’ll need to get this trunk too. That’s all, Michael.”

Nikita looked down over the half wall of the loft and saw Michael with the laptop and two cameras in his hand. He placed them down and walked up to the loft. He looked at the trunk. “Am I allowed to know what is in this trunk? Because the last place you took me to had bad things hidden in it.”

“It’s just Madeline’s memoirs,” Nikita’s voice cracked as she brushed past her husband and back down stairs. “I’ll get the laptop and the cameras into the car… and start plotting the route to Richmond… we should stay there tonight before going to Petersburg.”
