“How are you feeling, Adam?” Cinda asked as she sat down on the couch beside her boyfriend. He looked at Cinda and shrugged his shoulders. He was pouting and Cinda sighed. “Is this because your father is leaving with Nikita tomorrow? Or because they told you to slow down at physical therapy?”
“It’s been a rough couple days,” Adam stated without confirming anything. “School has been… rough.”
“And everyone was kind of sad…” Cinda pointed out and Adam sighed. “I’m sad for Laura… she loved her father a lot and was looking forward to spending more time with him. It was kind of sudden.”
Cinda reached out and took Adam’s hand. “And you were pushing it at PT because you don’t want to wait, do you?”
Adam rolled his eyes and leaned his head back. “They should have gone on their trip as planned. Laura told them to do that… because we all know that it isn’t really a baby-cation. It’s something that Nikita needs and I don’t like her traveling.”
Cinda squeezed Adam’s hand and waited for him to look at her. “Let your father worry about her. You need to be focused on getting healthy… and listening to the physical therapist.”
“Jeffry is an idiot,” Adam retorted as he rolled his eyes. “He never even played sports. Have you seen how big that man is?”
“He is still your therapist…”
“But he doesn’t care that I want to play sports again,” Adam declared as he sat up straight and looked across the room. “He is behind the times… and my dad agrees.”
“Adam… you still need to listen to him… you don’t want to get hurt more.”
“Cinda, please…” Adam shook his head back and forth. “He is an idiot. He should know more about the therapy that athletes do to rehab. Plenty of had this injury and came back stronger. At this rate, I’ll be lucky not to be in pain when it rains.”
Cinda dropped Adam’s hand and stood up. “Look, Adam… I doubt that you talked to your father and Nikita about this. They both want what is best for you…. And if they felt that Jeffry wasn’t doing a good job…”
“Cinda, stop,” Adam groaned. Cinda placed her hands on her hips and rubbed her jeans. “You haven’t talked to them.”
“They know that I don’t like him.”
“But do they know why?”
“They have other things on their mind,” Adam shook his head and Cinda stormed away. Adam leaned his head back. “Cinda! Where are you going?”
There was nothing but silence and Adam groaned. When Cinda made her mind up, she made her mind up. Adam knew that she was going to start something that he didn’t want to start right now.
It was only moments later that Nikita walked in and looked over her shoulder. “What’s going on Adam?”
“Don’t listen to her,” Adam declared and Nikita arched an eyebrow. “You do that too often.”
Adam frowned as he was confused. “What are you talking about Nikita?”
“Worrying about me,” Nikita sighed as she sat down across from Adam, looking at his brace and then back at Adam’s face. “You are still a kid.”
“A teenager,” Adam corrected and Nikita was exacerbated with the statement. “Still you are underage and you are always going to be your father’s son, no matter how old you get.”
“Cinda is just alarmed about something that she shouldn’t get involved in,” Adam tried to brush it off. “Don’t listen to her.”
“I decided not to listen to her too much. But your father is listening to her. I don’t want to know why you are having problems talking to him. But I fear that it is me,” Nikita’s voice cracked as she turned her head away. Emotions were so out of control right now and the past few days had been difficult. Just seeing how upset that Laura was about her father made Nikita think too much about her children and what they meant to her. And Michael. And Walter. And Davenport. And everyone.
Adam dropped his head in shame. He knew that he was trying to let his father just worry about Nikita and the new baby. He admitted it readily. That is where Adam thought his father’s focus should be. Nikita didn’t get a lot of attention in her life and during this time of change for her, she needed it.
He didn’t.
Nikita swallowed hard as she swiped at her face. “You told me once… that my being here was not going to change your relationship with your father…”
“I’m a teenager,” Adam stressed as he didn’t like seeing Nikita cry. “Come on, Nikita… don’t do this.”
Nikita sucked in a deep breath and rolled her shoulders back. “I don’t accept this,” Nikita shook her head. “We’ll cancel the trip.”
“Hell no!” Adam jumped as he shook his head. “You two need to go.”
“It can be delayed,” Nikita spoke as the Michael walked in beside Cinda. “Adam.”
“Michael… we have to wait a couple more days before we go,” Nikita stood up as she shook her head. “Or maybe… I should just give you space with Adam… go stay with Walter or someone.”
“No,” Michael wrapped his arm around Nikita as he pulled her close to his body. “You have Cinda concerned, Adam.”
“I told her not to bother you,” Adam tensely spoke as he looked at Cinda. She didn’t back down. “It was you who was being stupid. And it is stupid for you to try to blame me. Call me when you get over this.”
Adam groaned as he leaned his head back. “Cinda… we were supposed to have fun while they were gone!”
Cinda didn’t respond and Michael respected her gumption right now. Adam was tough lately and pushing the limits of some people. “So… we can talk… but it is going to be the three of us…. Or we will wait until you are ready to talk to both of us. We are the parents.”
“Michael,” Nikita shook her head as she tried to pull away from him. Michael looked at Nikita and pulled her closer again. “Together. The three of us can figure this all out much faster.”
Adam dropped his face into his hands. He didn’t want this right now, but he didn’t want them to stay here any longer. He glanced at his father and realized that his father knew exactly what he was doing, pushing against what Adam wanted and forcing Adam to react in the way that he wanted. And it was working.
“Look… I just think that Jeffry isn’t the right physical therapist for me. And I’ve told you this,” Adam spoke as he looked down to his hands.
“The school insurance has you at that physical therapy center, Adam,” Michael explained and Adam groaned. “Then we need to tell the school that they suck. Jeffry told me that most of his clients are senior citizens. I’ve met some of them. I think most of them are retired!”
