Beatrice opened up the door and looked back as Rhoda walked with Nikita. If Beatrice didn’t know Nikita well enough, she would find this whole thing too surreal to be sane.
Michael was the perfect man for Nikita. He cared so much for her. They had a great family. But yet the step of getting Nikita to come here, for her wedding dress, was almost traumatic to Nikita. He had to beg Beatrice to get Nikita to go to the appointment that she had weaseled out of three times previously.
Nikita paused at the door and exhaled slowly. “You know… I found that dress online… I’m sure that it is fine.”
“You dragged me here for my dress… and now I’m doing the same,” Rhoda forcefully spoke as she nudged Nikita into the boutique. Rhoda looked at Beatrice and winked, feeling confident that since they actually got Nikita into the boutique that things would go forward from here.
Nikita looked around the dresses and turned back to find Beatrice and Rhoda standing there in front of the door. She knew that she was not going to escape right now. She rolled her shoulders and swallowed hard as she recognized the woman who was walking towards them, and it was clear that she recognized them too.
“I told you that you would be back,” Nancy, the saleswoman who had fitted Rhoda, spoke as she stepped forward. “You are Nikita… and you are getting married.”
“Yes,” Nikita nodded her head up and down.
“Please tell me that we have more than a couple weeks to work with here,” Nancy commented and Nikita chuckled slightly as Rhoda laughed happily. “A couple months… she is getting married the first day of spring.”
“Did you just decide on that date?” Nancy asked and then rolled her eyes. She didn’t need an answer from the look that Nikita was giving her. “I don’t get brides these days. You are to come get the dress right away…”
“I was going to buy off the internet,” Nikita admitted and Nancy shook her head. “I don’t like that answer either… Your friends called ahead and had me pull some dresses…. So you can come back.”
“Take the bull by the horns,” Beatrice indicated to Nikita as she saw the desire to run away. Nikita looked at Beatrice and chewed on her lip. “I’m not doing this for myself. I’m doing this for all of you… and Michael.”
“And we are making you do this for yourself,” Beatrice replied back as she watched Nikita carefully. She shoved her hands into her jeans and followed Nancy. Rhoda cleared her throat as she got closer to Beatrice. “We are going to be lucky if we get her into two dresses.”
The two women sat down as they didn’t hear anything going on in the dressing room. They were both thankful that Michael had talked to the store and got the store for them alone for a couple hours. They weren’t sure how long that Nikita would tolerate this. They just both hoped that once Nikita got into a dress, she would embrace the experience as she had made Rhoda do when she was shopping for her dress.
It was not long before Nancy stepped out and turned to show Nikita walking out in a white column dress. It was simple and it fit Nikita perfectly. Nikita looked nervously all around the boutique and looked at Nancy and Beatrice when she was made to step up onto a small stage.
“This one doesn’t have much detail…. The material is beautiful… and since you don’t have much planned yet for your wedding…” Nancy pointed out as she smoothed the back of the dress out. Nikita looked forward and blinked her eyes.
“Michael is making the plans,” Rhoda indicated for Nikita as she could tell that she wasn’t comfortable with the dress that she had on. She wrinkled her nose and shook her head from side to side. “I don’t think that’s the dress.”
“I didn’t think so either… normally the bride smiles when she sees the dress…” Nancy nodded her head up and down. “It seems a bit plain for you. Let’s go try another one on.”
“I’m sure the next one will be better,” Beatrice tried to encourage Nikita. But Nikita simply nodded her head as she stayed muted. She walked back and Beatrice twisted her hands together. “It’s like we are torturing her.”
“She should be happy about this,” Rhoda whispered as she looked at Beatrice, feeling guilty for being part of this. “Maybe she isn’t ready for this.”
“She is ready to get married,” Beatrice indicated as she frowned. “She just doesn’t want the dress… the ceremony… the flowers… you know, all the ceremonial things.”
The two fell into silence as they waited for Nikita to come out again. This time, Nancy didn’t seem as hopeful as she walked in front of Nikita. “This is more of a mermaid style dress… it’s still pretty simple with the embellishments… and I think it is pretty conservative.”
“Ugh,” Rhoda shook her head from side to side as she looked at the high neck line and the long length. “I don’t like it.”
“You don’t need to show us a dress if you don’t like it,” Beatrice looked at Nikita, who seemed to becoming paler. “You are ok, right?”
Nikita numbly nodded her head up and down.
“Let’s try something that is more modern… it has some sparkle to it and a dramatic back,” Nancy stopped Nikita from getting up on the stage. Nikita turned on her heels and almost ran into the dressing room.
Beatrice got up to look at the dresses that were around them, thinking that almost any of them would have been better than what Nikita had tried on. She wasn’t sure exactly what Nikita’s style was. She was a simple woman, but she could wear almost anything. She regretted not asking Michael more about what he thought that she would be happy wearing.
But this time, Beatrice stopped. The dress was pretty, but Nikita looked like she was just barely holding back tears. And they weren’t tears of happiness. “Nikita… talk to us… what’s wrong?”
“Not this dress,” Nikita almost hissed as she shook her head from side to side. She only saw one thing about this dress and that was how it looked like the dress she had worn for her Section marriage with Helmut.
“Nikita… what’s wrong?” Beatrice pushed and Nikita pushed a hand against her face, the rip of emotion taking over her body. “I… I… can’t do this…”
“You can get married – Michael loves you!” Rhoda declared and Beatrice shook her head. “She knows that…”
“I can’t get a dress… Not… this is wrong… all wrong…” Nikita sniffled as she trembled on that stage.
“What’s wrong?” Nancy asked from the side. Nikita looked around and she looked to her hands. “I’m caged… and this is wrong… I can’t do this… like this…”
“What do you need?” Beatrice pushed again and Nikita gasped while shaking her head. “I need Michael…. And I know that it isn’t right… but I’m not getting this dress for me… or for you, Beatrice. I’m getting it because Michael wants me to get it… but I don’t know what he wants to see… and I need him here… just like…”
Rhoda stood up and walked towards Beatrice, relieved to have Nikita talking, but taken back by what was being said. She wanted to protest that this wasn’t just for Michael, but she saw the look on Beatrice’s face that told Rhoda to stay quiet.
“I’m not going to walk down the aisle to Michael… I don’t want an aisle… I don’t want any tradition… I just want to be with Michael… because I’m already married to him… and I know that it is wrong in the eyes of anyone else who is getting married…” Nikita continued to ramble as she got off of the stage and looked around. “I need Michael… I want him here… I want him to make the decision… I want him to tell me what he wants to see me in... because I’m already married… and this is just… formal stuff… that he desires… that he wants for our family… and I can’t do it… I can’t do it like this…”
Beatrice moved forward and took Nikita’s hands. “Did you tell Michael this?”
“I didn’t… know…” Nikita sobbed out and Beatrice felt Nikita’s head fall forward against her body. Beatrice hugged her and rubbed her back.
“That’s the most romantic declaration I think I’ve ever heard…” Nancy blinked back her own tears as she watched the display. “He has to come.”
“Michael only wants you to be happy, Nikita. If it would make you happy for him to be part of this decision… to help you, he’d do it, Nikita,” Beatrice soothed Nikita as she stroked her back.
“He wants the tradition,” Nikita pulled back and Beatrice smirked. “I think he knows that you two aren’t traditional in any way.”
Nikita rubbed her face and shrugged her shoulders. “He wanted me to come with you two.”
“Because you didn’t tell him what you wanted,” Beatrice reached out and dried Nikita’s tears. “He’ll come with you, Nikita. I know that once you tell him this, he’ll do it.”
“Really?” Nikita asked and Beatrice nodded her head.
“It’s going to be so beautiful…” Nancy gushed as she had to pick up a tissue to wipe at her own tears. Rhoda looked at Beatrice and shrugged her shoulders at the scene.
But both were relieved to know what had to happen for Nikita to find a dress, and it didn’t involve them.>
