Adam was in pain as he settled in the corner of the cafeteria, wishing that the day was already over. When he returned to school last week, everyone was careful and had talked to Adam. But they didn’t want the reminder of what had happened so now that it was Tuesday, the fourth day of his return, Adam found himself alone at lunch.
And it was for the best.
He pulled out his science notebooks and started to review his writing, acutely aware that he didn’t need to study it any more. Adam took a sip of the ice tea that he had packed with his lunch and wished that Gretchen would have had lunch at the same time as he did so he wouldn’t be alone. Yet, without lunch like this, Adam would have found it harder to catch up with the school work that he had missed.
He wanted to rub his face but he knew better. Adam’s face was still mottled with fading bruises and he hated that he had to sit on the bleachers during gym class because he was not medically cleared from the concussion yet. He wasn’t about to admit to anyone that his leg was still throbbing.
“Hello Adam,” Robbie spoke as he was on the other side of the table. Adam jerked his head up and then his eyes scanned the area for any additional threats. There was no one, but they were absolutely being watched by students and the few teachers that were assigned in the cafeteria during lunch. “What do you want, Robbie?”
Robbie placed his book bag down on the chairs and looked at Adam. He was hesitating and Adam sighed. “I am studying.”
“I wanted to apologize again, “ Robbie spoke as he shifted and looked over his shoulder and then back to Adam. “Can I sit down?”
“That’s probably a safer position for you to be in for me,” Adam retorted and Robbie winced. “I’m sorry about that, Adam… but you are looking a lot better.”
Adam snorted and watched as Robbie sat down, not directly across from him, but just slightly to the side. Robbie was rubbed his hands together and then he slapped them down. “Look… my dad made me see a therapist… last week… yesterday… three times a week for a while.”
Adam nodded his head but didn’t speak. He was glad that Robbie’s dad was finally doing something as it was clear that Robbie was hurting from the death of his mother. “So?”
“She was the one that said that I had to apologize to you again… and that I needed to continue to apologize.”
“And I’m going to tell you to stop,” Adam shook his head from side to side. “You are going to tutor at the elementary school… and it’s all fine.”
Robbie was going to protest but he stopped as he knew that Adam meant it. “Damn… I had you so wrong…”
Adam watched Robbie out of curiosity. “Is there a point to this?”
“I was hoping that… see… Adam… I probably picked on you because of how much you had going for you… I mean, I wasn’t anywhere like you as a freshmen… and it scared me… and I bullied… it was wrong…” Robbie stammered and Adam leaned forward. “Again… history.”
“I need help,” Robbie finally spoke and Adam leaned his head back. “From me?”
“You are good at languages… right?” Robbie inquired and Adam nodded his head slowly. “You know that I tested out of French and Spanish… and that I take Chinese this year.”
“And you don’t seem to have to study like anyone else in your class,” Robbie pointed out as he looked over at a couple of the classmates that Adam had in Chinese class. “My mom was really good at languages… she knew French, Italian, German, Spanish… and some special rare dialects.”
Adam swallowed and continued to wait for Robbie. “I’m not good… and I’m struggling in French class… in fact, I think I’m failing.”
“You want me to help you?” Adam almost choked out the words. “You are asking the Nerd boy to help you?”
Humbled, Robbie nodded his head up and down. “Yeah… because you know about my mother… and others won’t get it… and because… I’m really sorry about how I’ve treated you…”
“I don’t need you being nice to me and needing me to be your tutor in order to undo what you have done,” Adam snorted as he shook his head. “This could be another setup.”
Robbie bowed his head and seemed to shrink. He didn’t speak and Adam sighed as he watched Robbie. He did seem like he had lost a lot of the bravado that he had from the moment that Adam walked into the school. Adam leaned his head back with some shards of dull pain behind his eyes. Leveling his head, Adam sighed. “We will meet in the library. During lunch. Never when there is no one else in there.”
“I’ll never…” Robbie sputtered and Adam shook his head. “I won’t take a chance, Robbie. But I wouldn’t be offering this if I truly thought there was a chance.”
“I just need help to get caught up… it won’t take long…” Robbie declared and Adam sighed. “Won’t be every day…at most… twice a week.”
“Anything,” Robbie stammered and Adam shifted in the chair. “Tomorrow.”
“Thank you,” Robbie rasped and he leaned forward. “Why didn’t you stop me?”
“What?” Adam questioned as he shook his head. Robbie looked around and directly stared at Adam. “You could have stopped me, right? I saw that in your eyes… I see it now.”
Adam was silent for a while and then returned the look at Robbie. “Martial arts taught me when to attack and when not to attack. It wasn’t the time.”
“It should have been,” Robbie pointed out as he stood up and looked at Adam. “Gretchen is lucky that she didn’t listen to any of us… you are good for her.”
Adam watched as Robbie walked away. He wasn’t sure if this was a good idea, but Adam had to try to see what would happen. Maybe this was truly who Robbie was meant to be.
“Hi Adam,” Lisa spoke as she was standing there. “I saw you talking to Robbie. You two must have worked things out… not that we will be getting back together…”
“Go away, Lisa,” Adam snapped as he shoved his book into his bag, annoyed that she was even smiling at him. He was pleased to see the smile drop.
“I thought... well, you were getting along with Robbie… I thought I could talk to you… make things better.”
“There is nothing to talk about,” Adam hissed as he shook his head and pushed his body up from the table. “I’ve lost my appetite.”
“You have given Robbie a second chance….”
Adam groaned as he couldn’t even look at Lisa, a headache not caused by the concussion splitting thru his head. “Robbie was never my friend. I thought you were… and I was so wrong.”
Adam knew that he had the ability to get some medicine from the nurse and that was what he needed right now to stop this headache. He didn’t even look back at Lisa as he knew that she would have tears in her eyes, but he didn’t care right now.
She hurt him more.
