Nikita held the iPad in her hand as she scanned the images that she had loaded on it prior to coming home today. Reagan had a physical scheduled with Ellie and Nikita decided to spend the afternoon at home with Sabina, who had run upstairs with barely saying a word to Nikita. Nikita didn’t make too much about it as she wasn’t exactly sure what the afternoon routine was and she didn’t want to disturb it if it was Sabina having some time to herself.
Plus Nikita had to figure out which pictures to forward to the customer.
It was just about the time that Nikita had finalized her selection that she heard the footsteps on the stairs. She turned her head and blinked as she saw her daughter walk into the living room.
She had a white dress on that was lacy overtop a pair of white pants. Then Nikita wasn’t sure what it was but Sabina had gotten something black to wrap around her waist and tie like a belt. Then Nikita tilted her head as she was almost sure that it was a leg warmer that Sabina had wrapped around her head and tied in the back. “Sabina… what are you wearing?”
“It’s my gi,” Sabina spoke with a voice that she tried to deepen as she stepped into the living room. “I’m learning the martial arts.”
Nikita shook her head and swallowed. “Martial arts?”
“Yes,” Sabina nodded her head up and down. “I’m in training for when the bullies come to beat me up.”
Nikita pushed the iPad away as she almost choked on instant tears. “Sabina… the bullies aren’t going to come beat you up…”
“They did Adam,” Sabina declared as she stepped back and made some kicking motion with her arms. “I’m good at this.”
Nikita blinked as she was stunned and Sabina continued to move, jumping and bouncing around, with no true movement happening. “Sabina… stop for a moment… talk to me.”
“Don’t worry, Mommy. I’ll be able to protect us,” Sabina stopped and bowed towards Nikita. Nikita pinched her hand and cleared her throat. “Sabina… it’s my job to protect you.”
“I fear not the man who has practiced 10,000 kicks once, but I fear the man who has practiced one kick 10,000 times,” Sabina quoted Bruce Lee and Nikita frowned. “Sabina… who is teaching you these martial arts?”
“Bruce Lee,” Sabina replied back and Nikita groaned. Sabina was using the internet to learn martial arts. “This was how he protected himself in Fist of Fury.”
Nikita watched Sabina kick her legs and thrust her arms around in a ball of energy and Nikita tilted her head to wait it out. Soon Sabina stopped, panting with her display done for Nikita. “Why do you think the bullies are going to beat you up?”
“They beat Adam up… and I’ve seen him. He is good at these martial arts… so I have to get better… Did you know how many different types there are?” Sabina inquired and Nikita swallowed hard. She did happen to know a lot of the martial arts that Sabina had quipped about. “Darling… come sit on my lap.”
“No… I must practice,” Sabina huffed and Nikita shook her head. “Let’s talk about this new interest… and what you are learning… because I need to know if you do have a bully bothering you.”
Sabina frowned but moved to the couch where Nikita caught her arms around her daughter and dragged her onto her lap. “First… do you have someone who is bullying you?”
“No,” Sabina shook her head from side to side. “But I’m smart and they are going to pick on me… and I don’t want to get hurt like Adam.”
Nikita sighed and pressed a kiss to Sabina’s forehead. “Sabina, Adam got hurt because he didn’t do the right things… the right thing wasn’t to fight… what would you do if you had someone bully you?”
“Reagan is always around. She would know.”
Nikita held back a chuckle as she hadn’t expected that response. “Ok… let’s say that Reagan wasn’t there… what would you do?”
“Come tell you and Daddy,” Sabina replied and Nikita nodded her head up and down. “Adam didn’t do that, Sabina. He thought he could handle what was going on in his own way… So you don’t need to worry about learning martial arts to protect yourself from bullies because you are going to come tell us if someone is bullying you.”
Sabina thought about it for a while and nodded her head. “But I still want to learn.”
“Why?”
“Just in case… because Adam getting hurt has made you sad… and I don’t like seeing you sad, Mommy,” Sabina declared and Nikita choked back tears again. She needed to do something about this and she needed to get Sabina to stop trying to learn martial arts from watching Bruce Lee on her computer. “I know something that you can do to make me happy.”
“You do?”
“Yes,” Nikita nodded her head up and down as she pulled the leg warmer off of Sabina’s head and handed it to her. “See… last year for Christmas, I made way too many cookies…”
“There are never too many cookies,” Sabina interrupted. Nikita laughed. She had made too many cookies but that wasn’t the point right now. “Well, either way… I want to start making plans for what I am going to make this year… and I want to know which ones you want to help me make.”
“You are going to let me help bake?” Sabina squirmed on Nikita’s lap with excitement. Nikita smiled broadly. “After Thanksgiving this week… I am going to start… so we need to start to prepare.”
“But I’ve never baked before,” Sabina pointed out and Nikita nodded her head while trying to think of something to do right now. Then she remembered that one random box of brownie mix in the cupboard. “We can look at my recipes to see which ones we want to make… while you help me make some brownies for after dinner tonight.”
Sabina jumped from Nikita’s lap and started to jiggle in front of her. “I love that! I’m going to be a baker.”
Nikita nodded her head up and down while she looked at what Sabina was wearing. “But Sabina… bakers don’t wear…. They don’t wear a gi like you are… maybe you want to change?”
“But I don’t have an apron or a baker’s hat!” Sabina frowned and Nikita chuckled this time. “I have an apron… and baker’s hats are not required.”
“I’ll go change!” Sabina started out of the room and was almost running up the stairs. Nikita was sure that the martial arts thought would go away for now and was about to sigh in relief when Sabina returned to the living room. “I still want to learn the martial arts.”
“Not from Bruce Lee… you can’t learn martial arts from watching it on the internet, Sabina,” Nikita warned and Sabina nodded her head. “Daddy will teach me. He taught Adam, right?”
“I can teach you some when you get a little bit older,” Nikita spoke and Sabina scrunched up her nose. “Mommies don’t know the martial arts.”
Nikita snorted and smiled broadly. “Your mommy knows the martial arts.”
“You do?” Sabina’s eyes got big. “Are you as good as Daddy?”
“I think so,” Nikita nodded her head up and down. Sabina’s eyes stayed huge. “How did you learn the martial arts? How did my mommy learn the martial arts?”
“Moms have magical powers, Sabina… you never quite know what we know and don’t know,” Nikita sagely spoke as she didn’t see the sense of getting into how Michael taught her what she knew. “But you have to wait a little bit more… you need to get a little bit older, ok?”
“Till then, I’ll be a baker,” Sabina lifted her chin and then finally ran up the stairs.
