Lisa walked into the coffee shop and saw Gretchen. She walked to the counter to order a latte and then moved to the table. “I got your messages.”
“I’m glad,” Gretchen replied as she leaned away from the table ad looked at Lisa. She saw the hardened face and she frowned. “There was a time that we were friends… we were here practically every day after school.”
“Then you started to spend every day after school with Adam,” Lisa shrugged her shoulders and Gretchen shook her head as Lisa returned to the counter to retrieve her completed drink. Gretchen waited for Lisa to sit down before replying. “I only started to spend more time with Adam after school when you got busy with Robbie.”
“What a waste of time that was,” Lisa retorted as she stared at her cup and then back up to Gretchen. “What did you want?”
“You and Adam were friends this summer… and I know that he won’t say anything to try to fix it… but I know that he misses that friendship,” Gretchen answered as she leaned forward. “Your families are close… his mother…”
“Not his mother,” Lisa jerked as she shook her head from side to side. “That’s Nikita… his father’s fiancée.”
“I knew that,” Gretchen frowned as she looked at Lisa. “But the woman is practically his mother… and the point that you don’t want me to hear is that Nikita is so close to your adoptive mother.”
“I call her Rhoda,” Lisa corrected and this time Gretchen groaned. “Are you going to correct me or are you going to listen to me?”
“You want me to make nice with Adam. I’m not interested in it,” Lisa declared as she shook her head from side to side. “I’m not going to go and buy him a Christmas gift just because our families like each other… I’m not going to pretend like nothing happened.”
“I don’t just think you should make nice… I think you need to apologize to him,” Gretchen snapped while shaking her head back and forth. She folded her arms across her chest and stared at Lisa. “He tried to be nice to you… the new girl in the community and the school when you both arrived at the new school… and you turned on him… left classes because you didn’t want to be around the nerd… and he isn’t a nerd.”
“He has changed in the past few months,” Lisa rasped as she didn’t want to think about how much Adam had changed.
“Look,” Gretchen shook her head from side to side. “With the way that you protest this… makes me think that you feel something more for Adam than just friendship…. Which is a problem for me… because I’m his girlfriend.”
“I don’t have feelings for Adam,” Lisa turned the cup around in her hands. She sipped while moving her head from side to side. “He was the only person I knew when I first got here… and he knew things about me because of our close our families are… and I don’t regret the decisions that I have made.”
“Maybe you should,” Gretchen bite back as she placed her hands on the table. “We have a lot of time left in high school… you should make up with him… apologize.”
Lisa thought about it but didn’t realize that she was shaking her head from side to side. Gretchen had sipped at her coffee and placed it back down. “Adam has accepted Robbie’s apology…. Hell, Adam’s tutoring him now.”
That sounded like Adam.
“Gretchen… I served him up for Robbie and those boys… I made it easy for them to pick on him… when I knew that it was going on. Saying I’m sorry isn’t going to be enough,” Lisa finally whispered.
“You never know until you try.”
“I know,” Lisa spoke as she stood up and looked around. “Just leave this alone, Gretchen. Be glad that you have a really good boy for a boyfriend…”
“Robbie is changing, Lisa,” Gretchen replied and Lisa shook her head. “That isn’t going to happen either.”
“Lisa… don’t leave…” Gretchen protested with a sigh. “I miss my friend.”
“My friend wouldn’t ask me to do this,” Lisa shook her head from side to side and left.
Gretchen sat there and thought about the answers that she had gotten. She hadn’t even been able to ask Lisa the things that she wanted to know.
Like why did Sabina tell her that Lisa and Adam had kissed on the porch.
Something more had happened between Adam and Lisa. Gretchen had known it but she held herself as Adam’s girlfriend.
For now.
But she was absolutely afraid that absence would make Adam and Lisa want each other more. It was best that they started being friends again. Gretchen just feared that it wouldn’t matter when they made up and that she would be the odd person out.
