Adam shifted the bag on his shoulders as he saw Lisa walking towards him. The school day was done and Adam was grateful as it just seemed so long. The weekend had been trying. He had been so determined to help but was so scared when things started to happen. To hear a gunshot and not be able to see what was going on was awful.
To hear Nikita cry out when the Devil took his own life was worse.
He knew that things were better without that person out there, but the aim was not to kill him.
To see Lisa now, Adam stopped and stepped over to be in front of her. She didn’t walk to the other side. She blinked and pulled up in front of him. “Hi, Adam.”
“Lisa,” Adam spoke as he turned his head to the side slightly. Nat had been on the news all weekend long and it was clear from the last story last night that Nat was tired and he probably hadn’t slept.
“Can we walk home together or are you going to see Gretchen?” Lisa inquired. Adam blinked his eyes as he didn’t expect this. “Gretchen is at chorus rehearsal for the holiday concert…. I was just on my way home.”
“Do you mind having some company?” Lisa asked as she shifted her weight from side to side, nervous that Adam was going to say no. He rubbed his hands together and cleared his throat. “Sure.”
They both moved silently to Lisa’s locker for her to pick up her coat and then outside. Adam wasn’t sure what was going on and he looked around as they were both late leaving the school. “What’s this about, Lisa?”
“I needed to talk to you,” Lisa spoke and Adam swallowed. “Why?”
“Nat said that you… helped…” Lisa’s voice cracked and Adam saw that she was scared. Adam sighed and thought back to that night. “I helped on the computer. I was nowhere near what had happened.”
“Oh,” Lisa sighed slightly and Adam shook his head. “I hated it… I didn’t know what was going on… I heard rushed orders and I know that my dad has this silent communication thing with Nikita... and it drives us all nuts… because we can’t tell what is going on.”
Lisa pressed her lips together and looked to the ground. “I didn’t like hearing that you were involved, Adam. You didn’t need to be.”
Adam stopped at the corner and shook his head. “You don’t get to make decisions like that for me, Lisa. We aren’t even friends.”
“I was hoping that we could be again,” Lisa admitted and Adam sighed. “Thank god.”
“What?”
“I was going to stop you today… and say that we needed to let this go,” Adam pulled the book bag to his other shoulder. “That there is enough other things going on out there… that matter a lot more than whatever we are not talking to each other about.”
Lisa half chuckled as she watched Adam walking across the street. She saw that he still didn’t look as strong as he used to and she jogged to catch up to him. “They couldn’t let you go out… you are still healing.”
“I’m healed,” Adam snapped and Lisa touched Adam’s shoulder. He stopped and looked at Lisa. “The weather is changing… it’s going to snow tonight… I’m a bit sore.”
“I need you to be ok,” Lisa admitted as she dropped her hand from his shoulder. “I need you to teach me.”
“What? I need to be ok so I can tutor you in something? What would I have to tutor you in? You took easy courses,” Adam questioned as he shook his head from side to side.
“To defend myself,” Lisa answered with a soft voice. She waited for Adam to look at her face. “You told me this summer you could show me some things… and I know that you didn’t use them... when you were… you know…”
“Lisa…”
“No,” Lisa snapped as she shook her head and stopped Adam from interrupting her. “I need to do that now… because while the Devil is caught… we don’t have all Michael and Nikita watching out for us… and I am the daughter of a cop… I need to know and I don’t want others to know.”
Adam rubbed at his neck. “Ok… so, I haven’t been able to do much of that… maybe when I’m ready again…”
“You’d do that still? After all that I have done?”
“Everyone should feel safe. If that will make you feel safe, yes,” Adam replied as he continued to walk, now both of them falling into silence.
Adam got to the spot for him to go one way and Lisa to continue on. He stood on that corner and shoved his hands into his pockets. “This isn’t going to be easy, Lisa.”
“I didn’t expect it…. I didn’t even expect you to walk home with me.”
“I miss you,” Adam admitted as he looked up and down the road. “I miss the friend that I had.”
“I do too.”
Adam was about to step away and then looked back to Lisa to stop. “So… this will help come Christmas.”
“You aren’t going up to Gretchen’s grandparents’ place? She said that she was allowed to invite you,” Lisa questioned as she was shocked. Everyone at school knew about the mansion that Gretchen’s grandparents had in one of the premiere ski areas and had the largest holiday parties during the break.
“It’s Sabina’s first Christmas,” Adam shook his head. “I’m staying here. With my family.”
Lisa was taken back and Adam tilted his head to the side. “And it’s your first Christmas too.”
“I’ve had Christmas before…”
“You know what I mean,” Adam pointed out as he crossed the street, saying nothing more.
Lisa wasn’t sure what this was all about, but she was talking to Adam now. It was awkward and strange. But it was a start.
