“Mommy… Mommy…” Sabina called out as she was running down the hallway. She pushed her parent’s door open so early in the morning and jumped on the bed between her mother and father. “Was Santa here?”

Nikita groaned as she opened one eye and saw that it wasn’t even 5:30 am yet. “Sabina? What?”

“Was Santa here? It is Christmas morning,” Sabina bounced on her knees in between her parents, ready to pounce on them.

“Sabina… lay down with us…” Michael reached for her and pulled her to settle between them. It was simply too early since they had just managed to finish putting together that huge dollhouse that Sabina wanted just a little bit after two am.

“But did Santa bring my gift?” Sabina protested loudly. Nikita rolled onto her back to look across the top of Sabina’s head to Michael, knowing that Christmas morning was about to start. “I don’t know, Sabina. We haven’t gone downstairs yet.”

“Funny Mommy,” Sabina laughed as she sat up. “We don’t need to go downstairs to know if Santa brought me the gift that I really really really wanted most of all.”

It was in that moment that Michael realized that while his daughter hadn’t asked for it, he knew what she was thinking about. He didn’t know what to do and realized that Nikita was still too sleepy to have figured out what Sabina was talking about.

Until Sabina put her hand on her stomach. “You are going to have a baby, right? Santa brought me a baby brother or sister, right?”

Nikita blinked her eyes as she felt them fill with tears. She wasn’t pregnant. She had just finished her menstruation cycle two days ago and there hadn’t been much time for Michael and Nikita to even be together. She had thought that Sabina had changed her mind on this gift. She hadn’t mentioned it.

“No… I’m not going to have a baby,” Nikita rasped as she sat up and pulled Sabina’s hand off of her stomach. “And that isn’t a gift for Santa to give.”

Sabina rolled her eyes with a groan. “I know that it is really a gift that Daddy has to give to you…”

“What?” Michael asked as he sat up and looked at his daughter, hoping that she had no real clue what she was talking about.

“I don’t know why you can’t be Santa if Mommy is the Angel,” Sabina innocently stated as she looked at her father. She turned in worry as Nikita gasped and shook her head.

“Sabina… where did you hear that?” Michael asked and he watched as his young daughter rolled her eyes that showed that in ways she was too old to be young. “You all were being quiet and having secret meetings… so I was playing with one of Adam’s old remote cars… And it had a microphone on it… so… I heard all of you talking about how mom was the Angel… I was confused because it sounded like everyone was the Angel… but I know that my mom was the first Angel.”

Nikita turned her head away and barely covered her mouth with a hand as the tears came down her face. It wasn’t because of Sabina hearing that she was the Angel. It was that Sabina still wanted to have a baby sibling for Christmas.

“I didn’t tell anyone!” Sabina declared strongly as neither of her parents had spoken. “I know how to keep secrets!”

“That’s good,” Michael struggled out as he didn’t realize that this was going to be so difficult.

“I was wrong, wasn’t I? I wasn’t really spying. I didn’t mean to find out that the toy had a microphone…. I just pushed a button and suddenly I was hearing everything,” Sabina started to rattle out as she was nervous. “That’s why Santa didn’t give Mommy a baby… and Santa didn’t stop and leave me gifts, did he? I was bad.”

“Sabina, Santa was here,” Adam spoke from the doorway, saving his father and Nikita at the moment. “I was just downstairs and there are lots of gifts.”

“But Mommy isn’t going to have a baby,” Sabina sadly spoke as she looked at Adam. “I don’t want the other things.”

“I think you do,” Adam responded as he just didn’t talk about the baby thing. “I think I saw something that you would never think you were going to get… and you won’t be able to see it until you come out here and let dad and Nikita go to the bathroom and get ready to go downstairs.”

“Why do they have to get ready when I am going to go down in my jammies?” Sabina asked as she slithered off of the bed towards Adam’s outstretched hand. He waited and wrapped Sabina’s hand into his before he looked at Michael nodded his head. “They are older, Sabina… parents have things to do before getting ready to go downstairs.”

“Because they are older,” Sabina smiled as she started down the hallway with Adam.

“Kita…” Michael whispered as he touched her shoulders. “It’s going to be ok. Sabina didn’t tell anyone about the Angel.”

Nikita looked at Michael and wiped her face. “I couldn’t give her what she wanted, Michael… and I feel awful…”

Michael leaned his head forward and pressed it to Nikita’s. “She can’t get everything, Kita… and it wasn’t right for you to even think about it.”

“I wasn’t,” Nikita shook her head from side to side. “But still... she really wants one…”

“I do too,” Michael admitted as he cupped her face. “And it’s not right for right now.”

“This isn’t how I thought Christmas was going to start,” Nikita rasped.

“Come on, Mommy and Daddy…. I’m going to start singing Christmas carols until I get to go downstairs. Adam said that there is a really big silver bow for me… and I want to see it…” Sabina warned and then she started to loudly sing Jingle Bells.

Nikita groaned and shook her head. “It’s so early.”

“We’ll get a nap,” Michael sighed as he kissed Nikita’s forehead. “Are you ok now?”

“As well as I can be,” Nikita nodded her head up and down. Michael wasn’t sure if Nikita was telling the truth, but for now, he got out of bed and took Nikita’s hands. He pulled her out. “Come on… we better share that shower together…”

“Michael!” Nikita declared and Michael laughed as he picked Nikita up in his arms and took her off to the bathroom before she could protest more.
