The door opened and Adam swiped the sweat off of his forehead as he entered from the back door. He turned and saw Nikita sitting at the table. She looked at him and then looked back to the book that she was reading. “Did you stretch?”
“Uh?” Adam questioned as he was confused about this. He had hoped to sneak into the house.
“You obviously decided to take a run after breakfast… I don’t need you cramping up on the way to the cabin,” Nikita stated and Adam nodded his head. “Yeah… I cooled down and stretched…”
“Good,” Nikita spoke as she stood and moved to the refrigerator. She pulled out the grape flavored Gatorade and tossed it to Adam. “Glad I had this stocked.”
“Thanks,” Adam spoke as he moved and opened up the cupboard to snag a power bar. Nikita glanced and sat back at the table. “Did you just have breakfast?”
“Well, Gretchen had breakfast… I wasn’t that hungry,” Adam explained as he leaned against the counter. Nikita didn’t look at him and she didn’t speak anything. Adam cleared his throat. “Well… we kind of broke up… but I don’t want it bothering the wedding today, mom.”
Nikita whirled around and Adam swallowed. He didn’t mean to tell Nikita about him breaking up with Gretchen until after they got back from their honeymoon. “Mom?”
Adam nodded his head slightly as he swallowed some Gatorade. “Yeah… I mean… I know that you aren’t my biological mother… and you may think you haven’t been a big part of my life… but you are marrying my father… and I might not always call you this… but everyone once in a while.. ok?”
Nikita blinked her eyes and barely nodded her head up and down.
Adam thought maybe this meant that Nikita hadn’t caught onto what else he had said. He took a bite of the power bar and chewed while Nikita stood up. She leaned against the counter beside him. “So… are you ok with what happened between you and Gretchen?”
Adam groaned as he shook his head. “No… I’m upset about how it happened… I didn’t want it to happen today… but she wasn’t who she used to be... she became so jealous of Lisa spending time with me on things that she hates to do… and she just… couldn’t make up her mind so I made it for her.”
Nikita rubbed at Adam’s shoulders. “You can’t live your life based upon what is going on with your family… I’m glad that you made this decision.”
“I shouldn’t have waited so long,” Adam admitted as he finished the Gatorade. “Don’t you have to finish packing or something?”
Nikita nodded her head. She started for the stairs and stopped with her hand on the refrigerator. “Do you remember those no-back fudgy peanut butter cookies that you loved during Christmas?”
Confused, Adam nodded his head up and down. “Of course… you said that maybe you would make some for my birthday.”
Nikita touched the refrigerator and looked at Adam. “I may have saved one… and froze it for today… thinking that maybe I’d need the chocolate to calm me down… and that I’d need the chocolate to just… sooth me… but I’m fine.”
Adam tilted his head and Nikita pulled her hand away from the door. “I took it out last night to defrost… it’s behind the Almond Milk that no one likes.”
Nikita waited and smiled at Adam. “You can have it.”
“But it’s yours,” Adam spoke and Nikita shook her head from side to side. “I don’t need it as I thought I would. But I think it will help you today, Adam.”
“Why?” Adam asked and Nikita smiled at him. “Don’t question your mom. Just say thank you and enjoy it, Adam.”
Adam blinked back tears as he didn’t know why he was crying. He moved across to Nikita and hugged her. “But I have to thank you!”
Nikita wrapped her arms around Adam. He seemed to know that he had to break up with Gretchen, but she was sure that this was his first real relationship and therefore his first real breakup. While she was sure that Adam wouldn’t let it bother him during the wedding, he needed to do something. The cookie may be enough. She rubbed his back and was barely able to kiss the top of his head; Adam was growing so quickly right now. She soon would be looking directly into his eyes – and grow tall much like his father.
“I have to go finish packing… so eat that cookie… and hit the showers, Adam. You can’t be stinking up the car,” Nikita pulled away from the emotional hug and gave Adam the space that he needed right now.
Adam watched as Nikita jogged up the stairs. He opened the refrigerator and moved the Almond Milk to the side and licked his lips as he saw the large cookie. He should have shared it with Nikita; it was big enough to be perfect for two people, or maybe three.
But he took the plate in his hand and grinned. It was food – but it was going to make him feel better.
