The dungeon is spacious, walls made of stone. The steel door has a barred window in it, the source of a soft, steady glow that spills across the floor. Other than that, the only light comes from a lantern, swinging wildly from the ceiling and casting strange patterns of shadow on the room. It is cold, but the many squooshy chairs have blankets draped over them. In the center of the dungeon, surrounded by four excessively squooshy chairs, is a card table. Welcome to the Dungeon Dimension, Naodrith's "happy" place for discussion of anything and everything that strikes you as being "interesting."

Have just written odd scene in TSPB that may or may not make sense, depending on whether or not it makes sense that the government would /not/ make backup files on minors.

Too tired to explain. Just read.

"These," he said, nodding at the folders tucked under his arm, "are the only records in the entire world that prove the existence of you, your brothers, and those little friends of yours. You see, apparently backup is just too much for them [the government] to comprehend. They've made things completely fireproof, and people don't usually want to steal from the Guildhall, so they didn't bother making any copies. They've just got folders full of things. See, here's yours." He handed her one of the folders. "It's got your birth certificate, your Separation forms, everything. No one in the entire world can prove that you exist - except the person who has that folder."

She flipped through the papers, then looked up at him. "I'm sure they have copies somewhere."

He laughed again. "No, no they don't. I'm a spy, Lasa. I know about these things. They don't bother with any of that unless you're a spy, or a Wavespeaker, or someone else special. Fortunately, none of you are special."

"I'm a Wavespeaker!"

"You've been a Wavespeaker apprentice since January. When you're eighteen and have definitely chosen to be a Wavespeaker, they'll make copies of this stuff and send it to New York. Not till then, though. Too much of a hassle."

"And why, pray tell, are we stealing these folders?"

His eyes flickered with amusement. "You are all runaways, which is punishable by up to twenty years in jail. However, no court in the world can try someone who, to all intents and purposes, doesn't exist. These are your ticket to escape if the law catches up with you."

Lasa stared at the folder in her hands - such a simple thing, really, and yet it held within it her whole life. "Zacharias, what about you? You're a spy and you don't have your folder - "

"Mine's back home in Maine," he said calmly. "So I'm exposed. Don't worry - I have no intention of getting caught."
