It's great to want to treat your mother-in-law like a special guest! But I think it all boils down to, what makes both people comfortable. I personally don't like anybody in the kitchen when I'm cooking. It's too distracting. But come clean-up time, all hands are welcome. I'm one of those who can't relax after dinner until the diswasher's running and the kitchen's cleaned up. Good friends and family usually pitch in to help with that, and I do that at their places too. But if I'm a guest at the house of someone I've only known for a short while, I generally limit myself to helping to clear the table. The hostess will generally make it known whether or not she wants help in the kitchen.
