The inspiration behind, Between heaven and earth

Last week, Wednesday, my son and three of his friends and two of their girlfriends were renewing the hotel room they had rented the day before. As they were preparing to do this, a man came up to them and called them dirty niggers (they were black) the girls nigger loving whores (they were white) and my son a dirty nigger lover. He's white too.
When one of the boy's, my sons closet friend for years, confronted the man simply asking, "Why he would want to disrespect them all like that?" To which the man swung at his face. Marcus is a small young man, from all accounts, this man towered over him greatly, yet Marcus floored him in self defense. While this was going on, his other black friend was trying to pull Marcus off the guy and succeeded, only to be punched in the mouth, cutting his teeth against his lip, by the recovering ignoramus. Needless to say, Marcus had to pull him off the man in return.
In the mean time, the third young man began to gather their things together, since the man who approached them was none other than the hotel owners son, figuring they wouldn't be able to stay another night in the place. Assisted by my son and the two young ladies they preceded to load up my sons car with their luggage and suggest the other two get in and go. Before this could happen, the owner came out with a can of mace and began spraying and chasing after everyone with it. His son was flat on his back at this point. Although his accuracy was somewhat shameful to a graffiti artist, he did manage to hit the mark on some of them, my son included, who he chased in circles to keep him from getting in his car. It turned out the police were called, perhaps by him, the boy's say it was one of the housekeepers who called, either way he was determined to keep them there anyway he could. It turns out after all the witnesses were interviewed by the several officers present, the owners son was at fault and accordingly cuffed. The rest is pending. The fact that this man was a racist is obvious, the fact that he was arrested is justified, the thing that bothers me, is he was ten years the senior of my son and should have known better.
So, in closing I would like to say, that the night this was told to me, I had just finished watching the History Channel's documentary segment on John Brown and his cause.
Isn't it strange that people say, "that's old history" and walk away? Is it old history? Are we not all slaves if ignorant? Doug S. 2001
