Subject: Dreams, You Know

Dreams, You Know

You know we all have dreams, you know.
She was old with yellow white hair past her shoulders,
running with clip-clops,
dull black gown to the ground
gaping to her naked breasts,
with dried ugly teats,
and gripping a wood-handled kitchen knife,
stabbing the air as she screamed
my name to stop as I ran.

And my two brothers appeared in the gloom
that had no trees or mist.
They offered me raw potatoes
and rubbed them on their arms
like, I thought, to stanch blood in slices.
I tripped and fell and put my hands over my head
and the giant face of my father appeared.
He asked me why I was on my knees.
With the screaming behind me,
I had no answer
and we floated away
into a dark cloud.
To another dream. It was better.
