The View.

I was gazing at the white wall on the other
side of the street. Yes, the one with long
cracks, patches of damp cement, and in late
afternoons match a map of the world.

The wall disappeared and so did the twilight
and I saw a succulent field stretching to
the sea where a work horse, which trotted along
its shore. Flared nostrils, flying mane, head
held high, facing the sea where sailing vessel
was slowly being devoured by the far horizon.

The sea was so glassy clear that it merged with
the sky, where a few fluffy clouds pretended
to be castles in a toddler's dream.

All this made no difference to the horse, which
had worn eye patches when trudging slippery,
exhaust fumed streets. Soft sand, a green field
and no smell of human slums. A happy harness
free, who can ever ask for more?

The wall reappeared and so did the twilight,
when the phone rang, dogs barked, car horn
blared and a military band came marching
down the street.
