Linear Steps

Skinned my knuckles
on the door post
dragging these nets
to finish the mountain
covered with orange floats
and full of holes like
black eyes entreaties.

The plankton stink
covered with diesel
filled my home.
I took two pictures
out of their dusty frames
and folded them
into my pocket, deep,
like life growing up.

I sacrificed my Nam lighter,
just like that, I threw it
like a splotch of hell,
and walked out of that misery
through the rising shadows.
It smelled like finality.

I slogged through the sand
toward the city lights.
There, I can starve with people.
