Kyrie filed into the Hatching Grounds with her fellow candidates, heart pounding in nervous anticipation. The hum of the dragons was almost reassuring, and the friendly chatter coming from all around was a small comfort.
An older boy next to her introduced himself as Rio. "I'm Kyrie," she whispered loudly back, as suddenly all grew quiet except for the dragons, who hummed louder. The first eggs cracked and a trio of starving emeralds tumbled from their eggs. Kyrie prepared herself as they stumbled towards the string of Candidates looped around the eggs.
The three Imprinted. Kyrie wasn't discouraged, as three more whites spilled onto the sand. Still, she stood alone. When a brown, four whites and two blues paired and still she remained, she started to get a bit edgy, and even more tense when a white and a blue joined their paired clutchmates, and an emerald Imprinted to Zalkintea, a girl whom she knew by name but not personally.
One more brown and copper paired off and left the sands before there were only two eggs left unhatched. Instinctively, she moved along with two other girls who appeared to be close friends to encircle the gold egg. Rio, the one who introduced himself, became one of five boys crowded around what had to be a copper. Seconds dragged by like minutes, minutes like hours.
Finally, as though synchronized, both eggs showed cracks at the same time. One of the girls fainted, and her friend bent down to help, leaving Kyrie the only one for the newest arrival to see- the regal little queen that broke neatly out of her shell without stumbling or tripping over herself as her less graceful clutchmates did. She was the most stunning gold Kyrie thought she had ever seen.
Something distracted the newborn beauty from the trio of girls, and Kyrie looked over just in time to see the copper Ravenel Imprint to Rio, and she smiled before turning her pale green eyes back to the shining gold hatchling. Much to her amusement, the gold stretched her wings and looked around in a fair imitation of a copper dragonet.
And then, she Imprinted. They locked eyes, and in that magical moment, the mind of dragon met rider, and a young voice, a near reflection of Kyrie's own, rang in her mind, You are mine Kyrie, and I, Kyrissaeanel would like to be fed.
"Kyrissaenel. Anything you want, love." Kyrie murmured aloud. To her, it was the most beautiful name in the world, and her green eyes shone happily as she lead Lemies' newest queen off of the sands.
