He remained unnoticed, as did the strange look on his face- a combination of hurt, rejection, and some other emotion. The apprentice minstrel was no doubt recalling the last Hatching he'd attended, at which he'd been left standing.
But then you found me. A voice murmured soothingly. A rather small emerald drake curled up in her favorite spot, cradled against the boy's forearm and his soft tunic, jeweled eyes looking up at him adoringly.
"I sure did, Calli." He replied, but couldn't help but continue to think depressing thoughts as he watched the rest of the hatchlings pair off.
It's their fault for not choosing you. Two blues, matching almost perfectly in size and coloration perched on either shoulder. The one who had spoken was the more talkative Caden.
Yes, added Trill, Caden's matching counterpart, And it worked out better. Why have one dragon when you can have three of us?
"Thanks, guys." Tallon smiled weakly. "I don't know about you, but this whole hatching thing is starting to get a bit boring." he looked back at the sands, only to find he had missed the Imprinting of the gold and the last copper. Just as well. But he couldn't help but note the remaining boys left alone.
They won't be as lucky as you Calli said sadly, giving the drakes' equivalent of a soft sigh.
"No, they won't." Tallon replied, then all four left the grounds.
(OCC: I changed the drakes' names yet again. Calliope (a.k.a. Calli) is the emerald, Cadence (Caden) and Trill are the blues.)
