Hey, Zoa! I went to high school from the years 1977 until 1980. I should've graduated in '81, but I had already dropped out by then. Up until high school, I had always been a "nerd." Why was I a nerd? Because I went to school to LEARN! I could pull an "A" in ANY class, and I often did. I would usually read many chapters ahead of the class, and would be amazed when the other kids asked what I considered stupid questions. Sometimes the teachers would stop talking about the subject matter, and start talking about the upcoming FOOTBALL game, or something like that. The Jocks would terrorize the other kids, and the teachers would stand behind them. Many of their parents were rich, and influential. They were told on a daily basis that they were "above" the other kids, and some of them even RAPED some of my female friends. Our little group stopped being "nerds," and became "burnouts." We all wore ratty clothes, smoked alot of dope, drank liquor right in school, and started "getting back" at the jocks. We would pour airplane glue in the locks on their lockers, we would go vandalize other schools, and write the name of our school team in spraypaint, so those other schools would think it was our "jocks," and when we all got cars, we started playing deadly games of "chicken," and find all kinds of stupid ways to risk our lives, and those of our enemies. If guns had been readily available to any of us, I guarantee you, there would have been some deaths.

I agree with you, that the way teachers, parents, and other adults encourage bullies, with that whole "boys will be boys" mentality, is where I place the blame. These shootings have been coming for a long time, and they're only going to get worse, until adults can become role models for these disturbed children. High school was the most miserable time in my entire life, and I didn't have it HALF as bad as some kids. To this day I have a LOT of hostility towards bullies. If I see someone trying to intimidate someone else, I will step in, and they will wonder just what kind of psycho I am. I can scream, and shout, and bug out my eyes; in short, I can be quite intimidating.

Only a few months ago, I was driving to work, and a guy almost cut me off, and almost hit my car. I honked at him, mostly to tell him where I was, and then when I saw my chance, I blasted past him, so as too keep this poor driver behind me, for obvious reasons. When I stopped at a red light, this young, strong, and obviously violent individual got out of his car to walk over to mine and confront me. Well, I jumped out of my car before he could get there, so he wouldn't be towering over me while I'm seated, and I had a tire iron in my hand, and I made damn sure he could see it. He shouted "what, are you gonna hit me with that?" I answered, "take another step closer, and find out." Well, he had to think about that, and when a bully actually starts THINKING, his fight is over, believe me.

The world is FULL of creepy bastards that like to hurt or intimidate others. I don't need a gun to defend myself from punks like that, because I'm not afraid of dying, or even getting hurt. It's all mental attitude, my friend, and experience. You see, I've had the holy crap kicked out of me many times, and I've learned something about that: you can survive! So I learned some "street fighting" techniques, and I'm not above a kick to the nuts, a head butt in the nose, elbows wherever I can get 'em, even fingernails in eyes, or biting! I don't attack people, so if someone attacks me, they deserve whatever they get.

And don't be afraid to use the cops, either! I had a guy threaten me just last week, over a PARKING SPACE, and I called the cops. They said, "it's your word against his," as far as filing assault charges, but then their records showed he was DRIVING WITH A REVOKED LICENSE! So he went to jail. And even if he hadn't, they would have it on record that I filed a report. So if I ran into him again, it would look like a pattern.

Don't let anyone bully you, Zoa, and don't let them bully ANYONE ELSE, either. You will find that you're alot tougher than you think, given half the chance. As far as making teachers and other adults aware, that is a battle WORTH FIGHTING! I wish I could've sat every one of my high school teachers down, and told them exactly what they were encouraging in their "favorite jocks," and the daily terror of students who came to school with one thing on their minds: TO LEARN!
