Date Posted: 08:59:41 12/12/03 Fri Fans eager for the 43rd Proviso West Holiday Basketball Tournament can get a preview this Saturday (12-13-03) at the 2003 Panther Pre-Holiday Shootout at the Sports Arena (Wolf & Harrison) in Hillside. One of the matchups to watch is #2 Hyde Park battling Austin (3:30pm). The Indians are riding a 5-0 start - best in school history - and five of the six wins have been against ranked opponents, including last year's Public League finalists Crane and Julian. The x-factor in this game could be the play of Hyde Park senior G Stephon Hannah. A step away from moving to Texas during the off-season, Hannah's presence (and defense) have lifted the Navy and White to heights unseen in program history. He's averaged 12 points and 4.6 steals in early action and has spearheaded two comeback performances in the last two games - a seven-point win against Curie and a three-point overtime win against #5 Julian (Hannah sent it into OT with a 3-pointer), both at Aitchpe Arena (Hyde Park's home). Another game to watch is a battle of two former state champions as (Maywood) Proviso East and Whitney Young go at it in the feature contest (7pm). The Pirates of P-E have a new coach in David Chatman - who is taking over for new [Harvey] Thornton coach Troy Jackson - but the same old tradition of blazing the West Suburban Gold. Lead players this season include 6-6 senior forward Nick Brown and 6-1 junior guard Philip Perry. Whitney Young - the defending two-time P-W Holiday champ - will look to use this game as a tune-up for the 16-team showdown. Second year coach Ron Branch sends Northwestern signee Sterling Williams (6-3 Sr G) into battle along with tough post player Laird Walker (6-5 Sr F). Austin has a possible advantage in the post with 6-9 junior Marquis Young and 6-8 sophomore Huey Ervin. [ Next Thread | Previous Thread | Next Message | Previous Message ] |
