This was always there the whole time. And you got here by ignoring it. Sorry, but it's the mistake we made as a society. We took all those assholes and bigots and shamed them out of public life, swept it all under the rug, then said we fixed racism, sexism, homophobia, etc.

But all this time, we just stopped them from being open about it, so they started talking in coded messages and recruiting vulnerable young people (like cults do). And then in 2016 some shithead got elected and gave them permission to be their worst, and now they're not pretending to be decent people anymore.

That's how we got here. Because we were ALWAYS here, and just pretended like we weren't. And we're still too shy to admit where we are, and what these people are: domestic terrorists.

And the thing is, you can't talk your way out of here, there's no reasoning with these people. I have no doubt that this is going to end in violence, so you have to be ready to fight or leave. Because this doesn't end. Like that poem Mike quoted, sooner or later you'll be next.
