This is a weird situation for me as a writer and a reader. As a reader, finding out that a particular character was based on a real person never really affected my feelings about the character, but it altered my view of the writer. I felt I could understand and relate to them better knowing that they did something I do as a writer as well.
As a writer myself, I have had several characters in different stories that I patterned after specific people in my life. Many times there have been scenes that a character experiences that I went through myself. I have had problems when I patterned characters after other people I knew though. The best example I can give for this is a story I was writing that had a character based on my roommate whom I was caregiver for. When she passed away, I was unable to continue that story, even though I had more planned for it. It was as if the muse was just gone, the characters in my head just quit "talking to me". Another story I had a main character love interest patterned after someone in my real life and when I realized that this person had never and would never care about me the way I thought they did, I killed off the character in the story. I guess what I'm saying is that patterning after real people can be a dangerous tight rope for writers in my opinion. It can add depth and meaning to your story, but it can easily kill your connection to the story if something changes in your relationship with that real person. It's not something I necessarily recommend to writers just starting out.
