Malcolm is sort of the progenitor of Young Sheldon. Though Sheldon, I'd say is higher on the genius level, and Malcolm is better at fitting in with his peers.

It also was known for its darker humour when most comedy shows were still doing the moral tie-up at the end, if you know what I mean? Like, when a character does something bad, they have to get caught and face the consequences. The Hayes Code was still prominent in mainstream US TV shows.

I remember being shocked when Reece got pantsed (briefs and all) by Malcolm at the water park, in front of a bunch of girls. The lads would cause all kind of mayem and half the time, the parents didn't know or didn't care.
