Subject: My Summers...

That's an interesting question. And I suppose it depends on which part of my childhood we're talking about.

The first twelve or thirteen summers, growing up, we'd go on holidays, or vacations, depending on what you call it. My childhood passport was filled with lists of countries my parents had taken us to. From the Mediterranean region, Greece, Spain (specifically the Spanish islands), Cyprus, Turkey (back when it wasn't so politically 'unstable', etc. To more exotic locations, like the Carribean islands, Dominican Republic and the Bahamas.

All that stopped when I got to 21. The last time I went abroad, it was for my mother's 40th birthday. I'm 41 now, so that's strange to think about. I'm not a big fan of going abroad unless it's somewhere specific I really want to go (I'm a homebody). There are a few places I'd like to check out, but my budget is tight.

Also, some summers I had more friends to hang around with than others. A large part of my high school years were mostly lonely ones. Everything just sucked for me around the same time and I gave up trying to hang on to or make new friendships. Though I did have a new group of friends in my last year of school, and the couple immediately after. We'd watch wrestling together. The WWF kind. We'd go to heavy metal concerts, and saw a lot of big named bands, like Metallica, Iron Maiden, Slipknot, Green Day etc. Played a lot of snooker (it's like table pool if you don't know what snooker is, and cards, and video games, etc, though I've never been a big gamer).

So when I think of great summers, they're mostly the ones I remember, the teen ones I just described and also, the years between about 8 and 12, when I'd go off 'adventuring' with my friends, We lived at the edge of a village and lots of fields and rural land surrounding us.

(actually, I'll post a drone shot of it at the end of my answer, though whether that will make it into the magazine, is another matter. Feel free to remove this part if it's a problem for the mag.)

Whenever we had free time, during the summer, or the weekends, we'd go exploring the fields. That's all there was for miles and miles around us, and also that's all there was for us to do really. The closest town with stuff for kids to do during the summer or weekends, was several miles away, and even there, there wasn't much besides a swimming centre. The closest cinema was about 10 miles away in a bigger town.

We'd also sometimes skip school and mess around. There was a coal mining museum about five miles on the other side of those fields, that we'd sometimes walk towards. And whenever we made it all the way, it felt like we'd walked across the world, (bearing in mind we were 10 lol). And I don't think you can see it in the video, but there are some cliffs, with little caves at the bottom. That's where we went whenever we wanted to do something we didn't want our parents to know about. Smoking, looking porn mags, skipping school, etc.

I watch this video sometimes now, when I feel homesick. I moved to Scotland 15 years ago, and haven't been back to England. I love Scotland, but sometimes I like to think about the memories I had growing up and the video helps me to.

Also, you can see my old high school at 00:55. I lived just a little bit to the north of it.
