Subject: Summer reading...

This wasn't a thing in my school. I was never given a book to read outside of school time, by a teacher - at least I don't think so - other than textbooks covering the course we were studying (ie, science) during term time.

We did study literature at school, though rarely was it something that interested me. It was usually something like Shakespeare. The archaic type of English language it was written in, frustrated me, if anything, at that age. I remember venting to my English teacher about it. Though I understand it a little more now. I'm still not really a mainstream reader. A lot of the biggest titles that have become household names, often end up being overrated, at least in my experience.

I discovered the pleasure of reading, pretty much by myself. I don't know if it was just my social circle, but there weren't a lot of people who enjoyed reading, around me growing up.

At first, it was just non-fictional, fact based books, usually about astronomy, and cosmology, that intrigued me (possibly because of all the alien movies I would watch on TV. I'd see pictures of Saturn and Neptune and I'd just find them so pretty, fascinating to look at).

I was about 8 or 9, and I'd be going to the library by myself to check astronomy books out on my junior ticket. I didn't really equate reading with escapism until a little later on.

Eventually my reading interests broadened out to include sci-fi, too. And also fun kids horror stories like Goosebumps.

In my late teens, I discovered online gay fiction, could be really enjoyable, and it was almost always free. Sites like Gayauthors and various other places, provided me with years of material to read and enjoy.

Now I read a pretty broad spectrum of fiction, and haven't really read any non-fiction in a while. And when I say read, it's usually an audiobook. But it's one of the things I enjoy to do the most, in my free time. I can be deep into a story, while I'm out walking, or cleaning the dishes, etc.
