I participated in NaNoWriMo two years ago and met the word target, on time. Then I put the thing away for a long while. Turned out what I had was a very rough first draft/outline and that had been my aim. I've been working sporadically on the second draft and am about 2/3 of the way through. I expect that when I get as far as completing a third draft, I might be closer to what I want.

Anyway, my point is, I wouldn't have that awful first draft to work from if I hadn't taken the challenge. I'll admit I'd already had an eanogram of the characters and their conflicts.
