"...let us use this occasion to expand our moral imaginations, to listen to each other more carefully, to sharpen our instincts for empathy, and remind ourselves of all the ways our hopes and dreams are bound together."

And let us hope the man heeds his own words and realizes that the "empathy" of which he speaks has to extend not only to those who disagree with us, but also among those who are of like mind.

In the long term we don't "heal divisions" by abandoning our own principles, we just exacerbate them. As the South African experience has shown, real "reconciliation" can only be arrived at through empathetic, just and forgiving pursuit of the truth.

The kind of expansion of "moral imagination" and memory of "all the ways our hopes and dreams are bound together" is what inspired people to vote for him in the first place.

His failure to carry forward the "imaginings" evoked by his "Yes, We Can" speech has contributed strongly to the demoralization of the coalition that mobilized to elect him, and left a vacuum which the howling heads of divisiveness and free-floating rage have rushed (pun intended) to fill.

It was another powerful, intelligent, inspiring speech. If only he will find himself inspired to action by it....
