DOUBLESLAY EPISODE 1x03: Freedom

Anya and the red-skinned demon are where we left off last episode; in the house where some kind of warlock
is supposed to live. Anya seems to believe he is home.
ANYA
Matthias! Get your ass down here at once! I have a job for you.
(silence)
ANYA *smiles* *kind voice*
You know, I'd be really grateful if you would come down
(silence)
ANYA *angry*
*Or*... I could just ask my associate here to rip your head off
RED DEMON
I like that plan
ANYA *smiles*
Of course you do sweetie. We would all love to rip his head off.....(beat) but I'm giving him five seconds
to (raises voice) get his ass (shouts) down!
VOICE (O.S) *angry*
What the hell do you want?
Anya looks up and sees a young guy standing on top of the stairs in front of her. he walks down the stairs
towards them.
ANYA *nice*
Hey baby
MATTHIAS *angry*
Who are you and what the hell are you doing here?.... no offense
ANYA
You really should learn how to express yourself.... of course I'm offended
MATTHIAS

ANYA *smiles*
I'd like you to meet Mr. Nynka Stompe, or just Stomp. Can you guess where he got that nickname?
MATTHIAS *jokes*
He's a boxer?
ANYA *smiles wide*

Whatever Ahn.... well, as much as I love this conversation, I *do* have schedule here. So if you two don't mind.....

Anya nods at Stomp who immediately reaches at Matthias and grabs his throat. He squeezes tight and lifts
Matthias off the floor. He's desperately trying to do something, but he can't.
ANYA *calm*
You know, you're being rude and I hate rude people. You need to think before you say something.
Do you understand?
Matthias nods because he can't speak.
ANYA *calm*
Good. Now, I would be really grateful if you could help us. Do you think that's possible?
Matthias is looking bad, he's getting weak.
ANYA
Oh, for heaven's sake Stomp, can't you see he's trying to talk?
Reluctantly, Stomp let's go of Matthias throat. Matthias falls down and begins to gasp for air.
Anya let's him catch his breath for a few seconds.
ANYA *nice*
So.... do you think you can help us out
MATTHIAS *still catching his breath*
What do you want me to do?
ANYA
Not much, just kill someone.....
MATTHIAS
Somehow I think it's a little more complicated than that
ANYA
Her name is Buffy Summers
MATTHIAS
The Vampire Slayer? Are you kidding?
ANYA
No honey..... if I make a joke, I laugh or at least smile.
Matthias has recovered and stands to his feet again.
MATTHIAS
I don't even know if I *can* kill her. She's a slayer.... the most powerful slayer in centuries
ANYA
I'm sure you can find a way.... with the right motivation (looks at Stomp)
Anya walks to the door, closely followed by Stom.
ANYA *facing the door*
Oh, before I forget...... you have two days. Have a nice day
Anya and Stomp walk out of the building.

At the gang's home, Buffy and Faith are training in one of the larger rooms of the house. Faith and Buffy
have completely cleared the room and then turned it into what looks like a larger version of the Magic Box'
back room. Faith and Buffy are currently sparring without any weapons.
Faith attacks and kicks Buffy in the face with enough force to make her falls backwards on her ass.
FAITH
Come on B, you're not even trying
BUFFY
Whatever....
Buffy sweeps her feet over the floor tackling Faith to the ground. Then, in one swift motion she uses the
momentum to jump to her feet.
BUFFY *smiles*
Oh come on F!
Faith quickly gets to her feet and the two slayers attack each other with punches. For almost a minute, they
attack each other and block the other's attacks. They don't hit each other until Faith spins around and
gives Buffy a powerful spinkick in the gut. Buffy gasps for air but keeps standing. Faith doesn't trust
Buffy one bit and keeps wary. After a few seconds, Buffy stands up straight again and the fight continues.
This time, Buffy doesn't get a chance to play, Faith immediately attacks with the same spinkick. Buffy's
taken by surprise and gasps for air again. This time, she can't maintain her balance and tumbles over,
obviously in pain.
FAITH
This is not your day. Are you feeling alright?
BUFFY *in pain*
What does it look like?!
FAITH
I meant, are you sick or something?
BUFFY
No..... I never get sick. Part of the slayer package. You should know.
FAITH
I get sick...... not often but sometimes.
VOICE (o.S)
Oooow
Buffy looks at the door, where the voice came from, and sees nothing but a closed door.
BUFFY *smiles*
George.... are you alright?
GEORGE (O.S)
Yeah, I'm alright
We can hear George walking through the hallway, cursing loudly.
FAITH
How long before he'll learn to open a door before walking through it?
BUFFY
Just a little while longer....
GEORGE (O.S)
Ooow!
BUFFY
It'll take awhile

Dawn is walking alone through the streets of Crestfall. It's early in the morning and people are walking around
almost the entire time. After a short walk, she arrives at a tall building that has the words "Crestfall High"
on a huge sign above the entrance. Students are walking in and out of the building.
DAWN *to herself* *quiet*
Don't worry Dawn... you'll be alright... no slayer to mess up the social life now.
She walks inside the building.
Cut to inside an office. Dawn is sat behind a large desk. On the other side is a man who looks quite old. Probably
in his late fifties or early sixties. A sign on the desk says Principal W. de Seis.
PRINCIPAL
So..... Dawn Summers, right?
DAWN
Yes.... that's me
PRINCIPAL
Well, I'm sure you'll feel right at home here. Your record speaks for itself.
DAWN *suspicious*
And... what does my record say?
PRINCIPAL
Basically that you're an excellent student who never skips school, studies hard and is nice to everyone around her
DAWN *smiles*
It really says that?
PRINCIPAL *serious*
(beat) No it doesn't.... Truth is... I don't know a thing about you except your name
DAWN
I can explain all that
PRINCIPAL
Okay.... explain
DAWN
My records got kind of... erased. Probably some silly student prank at my old school.
PRINCIPAL
Okay Dawn, I'll be honest here. I like order. I want the students to follow their classes, do their homework and
don't get in trouble. If you can do all that.... you'll like it here.
DAWN *smiles*

PRINCIPAL
Good. You'll feel right at home here.
Cut to Dawn walking through the school hallways. Everything looks normal. Kids are running around the hallways,
groups of three or four kids standing around and there are classrooms on each side of hallway. Dawn sort of
walks quietly through it. After awhile, she arrives outside.
GIRL (O.S)
Hey, who are you?
Dawn looks at where the voice comes from and sees a blonde girl, about her age. She looks around a few times,
making sure that the question was pointed to her.
DAWN
Me? I'm Dawn. I'm new here
GIRL
Well, yeah. That's obvious.... you know, with the whole looking around and all
DAWN
Huh?
GIRL
Oh, sorry. The guidance councellor asked me to show you around today.
DAWN *smiles*
Oh........ *who* are you?
GIRL
Sorry, I'm Cynthia. Come on, I'll give you the grand tour
Dawn smiles and follows Cynthia. From behind a tree, Buffy's head appears. Dawn doesn't see her because she's
walking away from Buffy.
BUFFY *frowns*
I wonder if she's evil
FAITH (O.S.)
Jeez B, you really need to give the kid a little breathing space
We now see Faith sitting behind the tree, looking really uninterested. Buffy looks away from Dawn and back to Faith.
BUFFY *upset*
Breathing space? Dawn has a history of getting in trouble. School... not an exception.
FAITH *defensive*
Hey whatever...... but you *do* realize that if she sees you, she's gonna freak out
BUFFY
Then I'll just have to.....
While Buffy turns her head back towards Dawn's direction, she sees Dawn standing two feet in front of her,
looking angry. Buffy is visibly surprised.
BUFFY *surprised*
D.. Dawn
DAWN *upset*
Go. Away.
FAITH
Come on kid, big sis just wanted to make sure you were safe.
DAWN *softens*
Buffy, I'm gonna be alright.... really
Buffy sighs.
DAWN *firm*
Buffy... promise me you'll go away
Realizing that Dawn is not going to take no for an answer, Buffy nods.
DAWN
Was that a yes?
BUFFY *frowns*
Alright
DAWN *smiles*
Okay then
Buffy smiles at Dawn and walks away. Faith stands up and walks after Buffy. Dawn watches them go off for a few
seconds and then turns back towards Cynthia, who is waiting patiently.
CYNTHIA
Who were they?
Dawn looks at Cynthia
CYNTHIA *smiles*
Big sis huh?
DAWN
How did you....
CYNTHIA *smiles*
Hey, been there, done that...... they drive you crazy, don't they?
Dawn and Cynthia walk off. Buffy looks back at Dawn and Cynthia walking off and stops in her tracks.
Faith also stops.
FAITH
Come on B, give it a rest. You promised to go away
Buffy looks at Faith for a few seconds, not talking, just looking.
FAITH *surprised*
No way!
BUFFY
Oh come on. I promised *I* wouldn't stay.... but you can....
FAITH
Like I said.... no way!
BUFFY
Come on Faith, something could happen to her here
FAITH
B.... you need to relax. Something can always happen. You can't be there 24 hours a day, seven days a week to
protect her. You need to let go.... just a little.
BUFFY
..............Okay.... we'll go
FAITH
Thank god
Faith and Buffy walk off. From inside the building, a girl is watching Buffy and Faith walk off.
She'll looking very serious. Her eyes shimmer bright red once before returning to normal.
RED EYED GIRL
This is gonna be trouble
VOICE (O.S)
Yes... it probably will be
We now see two more girls in the room. Their eyes both shimmer red once as well.

Buffy and Faith are sitting on the couch, watching TV. While Faith seems to be enjoying the laziness, Buffy
is not at ease.
BUFFY
She should have been back by now
FAITH *rolls eyes*
For heaven's sake B..... you're tripping
BUFFY *serious*
She should have been back by now
FAITH *annoyed*
Maybe she's hangin with some friends...... or, you know.... anywhere but here
BUFFY *annoyed*
What's that supposed to mean?
FAITH
Look B, the last person you want to hear this from is me, so let's just forget it
BUFFY
No. Tell me. Why anywhere but here?
FAITH
Well... she obviously hates that you're so over-protective.
BUFFY
Over-protective?! I'm the slayer and this town is on a hellmouth
FAITH
So what are you gonna do.... tie her to a chair and keep her inside? You can't always be there. She'll ask for
help if she needs it.
Buffy gets that Faith is, at least partly, right, but she doesn't like it. At that moment, Dawn steps in.
DAWN
Sorry for the delay. There was this funny thing..... what's going on here?
FAITH
Nothing special kid. Dinner's on in ten minutes
Dawn frowns once at the word 'kid' but then she walks upstairs. Faith doesn't notice the frown.
BUFFY
Uuuh, Faith.... speaking of things Dawn hates.... I have another one

It's night and at one of the local cemetaries, an enormous group of vampires has gathered. The crowd consists
of about thirty vampires of which most a male. On a small crypt in the center stands Matthias.
MATTHIAS *shouts*
My friends, we have two slayers in this town and we know what this means
The crowd begins to make more noise.
MATTHIAS *shouts*
If we don't do anything, they'll kill us off one by one...... so I say we attack!
The crowd begins to cheer.
MATTHIAS *shouts*
Tonight, I will undo the barrier that prevents you from entering their house, and you can kill them both
VAMPIRE *shouts*
Isn't there only one slayer?
MATTHIAS *shouts*
By some mixup, there are now two.... which makes it all the more important to terminate. Let's go now. Let's kill!
The crowd cheers even harder and the entire group moves in one general direction.... the direction of the slayers'
house

Faith is walking through her bedroom, getting ready to go to bed, when she casually looks through the window.
She looks away again, but instantly realizes that something is wrong. She immediately looks through the window
again and sees the vampire gang, ready to attack.
FAITH *soft*
Come on morons, you know you can't get in........ damn
Faith notices Matthias chanting and clearly recognizes him as a human. She runs out of her room towards Buffy's
room and informs her of the danger. Faith then runs back to her room and grabs a crossbow from under her bed.
She loads it with two bolts which are also under the bed and then takes aim through the window. The vampires
don't seem to notice them. Faith aims carefully and then pulls the trigger. The bolt pierces Matthias' forehead
who immediately drops on the floor.
FAITH *proud*
Oh yeah, I'm good
The vampires of course noticed the fall of their leader and look up at Faith.
FAITH *shouts out of the window*
You know, as fun as last time was, I don't really feel like slaying you all now. Get out of town and live......
well you know what I mean.
A few vampires take off which causes another couple of vampires to go, which keeps going until all vampires are
out of sight. Then, Buffy comes running into Faith's room, carrying a crossbow.
BUFFY
Are they in yet?
FAITH
It's taken care of
Buffy takes a look out of the window and notices Matthias' body with an arrow through his forehead.
BUFFY
And here I thought burying people in the backyard was a thing of the past
A few minutes later, Buffy and Faith walk out of the front door towards Matthias' body. It's a good thing
that it's a mansion with a big yard all around it, so noone has noticed. Both Buffy and Faith are carrying a
shovel. When they both reach Matthias, he suddenly opens his eyes. From all directions, vampires come running.
FAITH
It's a trap!
Faith and Buffy turn towards the front door but the way is already cut by two vampires.
MATTHIAS
Well Buffy.... time to die
Without it even hurting, he pulls out the arrow and throws in on the floor.
FAITH
How the hell did you do that? (beat) Doesn't anyone die anymore when you shoot them in the head?
Matthias just smiles. The vampires move closer and closer. Buffy and Faith both get the same idea and charge
at the two vampires that block the way back. Buffy swings her shovel and decapitates the vampire with one
swing. Faith tries the same with the other vampire, but it sidesteps and evades Faith's swing. The way is now
clear and Buddy and Faith run for the door. Not having time to open it, they bash right through it.
Buffy and Faith both grab their shoulders in pain; that door was quite solid.
BUFFY
That was a little too close
FAITH
Don't start celebrating yet
Buffy grabs Faith's crossbow and stands in the doorway. She smiles at the vampires who are only a few yards away
from her. She immediately dusts one vampire in a single shot.
BUFFY
I know what you all think, did she fire once or twice. What you need to ask yourself is... do you feel lucky?
The vampires look unknowing.
BUFFY
Oh come on, that's a classic
From the outside, Matthias takes command
MATTHIAS
Do you really think you can take us all? In a few minutes, this entire army will storm this house and kill everyone
in it.... unless....
FAITH
Is this the part where you make a demand?
MATTHIAS *smiles*
Good guess...... (beat) Buffy. She will come outside and play.
BUFFY
Or, you know..... not
FAITH
What's so special about *you*?
BUFFY
is that what you're thinking about now?
FAITH
I'm a slayer too
Faith comes back to reality
FAITH *shouts to Matthias*
Go to hell
MATTHIAS *angry*
You first
Matthias starts chanting again. Buffy shoots one vampire through the heart and reloads the crossbow. The vampires all
take cover as Matthias is still chanting.
FAITH
You know B, if that barrier comes down, we're in trouble
Buffy fires the crossbow at Matthias twice, hitting him in the chest and then in the head.
FAITH
I think it's safe to assume that the head is not the part to aim for
BUFFY
Faith....
FAITH
What?
Faith and Buffy look at each other for a second. Faith then quickly rushes out and runs towards Matthias. She grabs
his arms and drags him towards the house, which is only about ten yards. The vampires run out of their hiding to
attack Faith and help their leader. Buffy fires her crossbow twice but hits only once. This does slow down the
vampires enough for Faith to drag Matthias inside. He doesn't do anything until Faith lets go of his arm. He pulls
the arrows out of his body and stands up.
MATTHIAS
Do you really think you can take me?
Buffy jumps at Matthias and starts hitting him in the face. This seems to hurt him a lot more than the arrows did.
After less than a minute, Matthias is lying on the floor, bruised, beaten and very much unconcious.
FAITH
Looks like you get to tie someone to a chair anyway
Buffy shoots Faith a glare.

It's day again and Matthias is tied to a chair in the center of the living room. Faith is keeping watch over
him but he's clearly still unconcious. Then, Dawn steps into the room.
DAWN
Oh my god... who's that?
FAITH
Oh, that's that warlock we were looking for
DAWN
Well, I get why he didn't want to be found
FAITH
Hey, *he* attacked *us* here
DAWN
Oh..... why is he tied to the chair again?
FAITH
Me and B would like to have a word with him
BUFFY (O.S)
How's our houseguest?
We see Buffy standing in the doorway
FAITH
Still out
BUFFY
Have you tried this...?
We now see that Buffy has a glass of water in her hand. She walks over to Matthias and throws the glass of water
in his face. He immediately wakes up.
FAITH
Hey! I waited here all night. Couldn't you have done that before?
BUFFY *smiles*
Just thought of it
Matthias looks around and gets that he's not in the best situation.
MATTHIAS *weak*
Why the hell am I tied to a chair?
FAITH
You know, there was this thing about trying to kill us
MATTHIAS
Jeez woman, are you insane? I didn't try to kill you..... now get me out of this!
DAWN *whispers* *to Buffy*
Is this supposed to make sense?
BUFFY *to Matthias*
Let me do the questioning.... why did you attack us?
MATTHIAS
Attack you? Woman, I didn't attack you?
DAWN *disbelievingly*
You *didn't* attack them?
MATTHIAS
You know, if you ask every question three times, this gonna take forever
FAITH *sarcastic*
You don't really think this is gonna work, do you?
Matthias gives Faith a questioning look. Buffy looks Matthias straight into his eyes.
BUFFY *concentrating*
He really doesn't remember
FAITH
Come on B, he's just playing you
Just then, George comes walking into the room.
GEORGE *surprised*
What the hell?!
DAWN *to George*
Don't freak out, okay?
GEORGE *hyper*
I'm not freaking out. No I'm not.
DAWN *to Buffy*
What do we do now?
BUFFY
I have an idea. I have to make a phonecall.
Buffy walks out of the room and comes back a few minutes later.
BUFFY
No luck
Dawn and Faith look at Buffy questioningly.
BUFFY
Just talked to Willow about a truth spell. No luck.
DAWN
You mean Willow *can't* perform a truth spell?
BUFFY
Well, *she* can.... but *we* can't
MATTHIAS
Well, if you don't need me anymore... I'll be on my way
FAITH *sarcastic*
Okay, oh wait.... no.
BUFFY
I guess we just keep him locked up until he talks
MATTHIAS
That might take awhile considering I have no idea what you're talking about
BUFFY

Buffy, Faith and Dawn are having lunch in the kitchen.
BUFFY
Let's hurry. I don't feel very comfortable having some evil warlock in our house we're not keeping an eye on him.
What if he breaks free?
FAITH
Relax B, ghost-boy is keeping an eye on him
DAWN
...and that warlock guy is completely restrained.... right?
They then hear a loud scream from the other side of the house.
BUFFY *sarcastic*
Relax, she says...... I hate being right
Buffy, Faith and Dawn run towards where Matthias is held, but they encounter something completely different.
They see George in the ground, not moving. Matthias is still tied to the chair. His throat is severely hurt and
he looks dead. There's blood all around the room.
FAITH
Great
George now gets up, holding his head in pain.
GEORGE
Ow... that hurts!
George takes his hand of his head. When he looks at his hand, he notices that it is covered with blood.
We then see a severe wound on his head.
DAWN *to Buffy*
Isn't such a wound... you know...... lethal?
BUFFY
Normally... yes
FAITH *to George*
What happened?
GEORGE
I'm fine, thanks.......... it was some red demon. He was really big and looked really dangerous
FAITH
Okay, that tells us who sent him (points at Matthias)..... but not why
BUFFY
That's not so hard to figure out..... kill the slayer
DAWN
Yes, but then another slayer will just step in. They can never win.

We are in a cave where Stomp is walking around and Anya is standing in a corner
STOMP
We can never win like this.... with those weaklings doing the work
ANYA *smiles*

STOMP

STOMP

It getting near sunset. Buffy and Faith are just finishing burying Matthias.
FAITH
Some things never change, do they?
BUFFY
Well, at least I didn't have to bury the guy alone this time.
FAITH *smiles*
Too bad we'll never find out if he was lying and all
BUFFY
He was probably just afraid of that creature George talked about
FAITH
Yeah, probably
BUFFY
Come on, let's eat
Buffy moves towards the house and Faith follows her. In a few seconds, they have gone out of sight. As the last
bits of sunlight disappear, the ground over the freshly dug grave begins to stir.
Suddenly, a human-looking hand bursts up through the ground.
