DOUBLESLAY EPISODE 1x02: SHUDDER

Buffy, Dawn and Faith are lying in bed in three seperate rooms. Buffy, Dawn and Faith have no problems
getting to sleep. In Faith's room, two of the ghostly creatures come inside the room. It's not like they
just appear, they come through the door and that is very literal; *through* the door.
GHOST 1 *whispers*
This one is beautiful. Can't we keep her?
GHOST 2 *whispers*
No! He was very clear. They have to leave
GHOST 1
Then what are we doing here? It not like we can......
The creature waves his arm through Faith's head. Faith doesn't wake up.
GHOST 1
....do anything to them
GHOST 2 *hisses*
Keep your voice down, you moron! We can't touch them but they can hear us!
GHOST 1 *whispers*
So what are we doing here? I mean it's not like we can go through her stuff or anything.....
not that she has anything to go through anyway.
GHOST 2 *hisses*
My god, don't you ever shut up? We're here to observe her
GHOST 1 *dissapointed*
You mean... watch her sleep? That's the brilliant plan?
GHOST 2
We have to find out a way to get to them. Observing them is......
GHOST 1
....pointless this time of the day.
GHOST 2 *hisses*
Now for the last time, keep it down.
GHOST 1
You gotta relax Tom.... I'm outta here.
The first ghost leaves the room the same way it came. The second ghost stands baffled.
GHOST 2 *angry* *whispers*

The next morning, Buffy and Dawn are sitting at the kitchen table when Faith enters.
FAITH
Hey.
BUFFY/DAWN *together*
Hey.
FAITH
I hope you all had a good nights sleep 'cause this dump is gonna take a lot of work
In room next to it, that looks like a study, several ghosts are listening at the wall. The fact
that Faith just called this house a dump doesn't make them very happy.
GHOST 3 *hisses*
Dump?! You bitch! That's my house you're talking about!
Back with Faith, Buffy and Dawn, Faith has taken a seat at the table.
FAITH
What's for breakfast?
DAWN
Well.....
Dawn stands up and walks towards the cabinets and opens them.
DAWN
There's thirteen-year-old milk, thirteen-year-old cornflakes, thirteen-year-old eggs and bread.
FAITH
Let me guess.... it's thirteen-years-old?
DAWN
Good guess.
BUFFY
Nobody has been here in a long time.... I wonder why not
FAITH
Maybe it belonged to some rich guy who got bored of this place and forgot he had it
BUFFY
Yeah, maybe.... I'm gonna go to city hall now and ask for records about this place....
FAITH
....leaving us to do the big cleanup here.
DAWN
What do you mean "us"? I'm going with Buffy.
Buffy and Dawn both stand up.
FAITH
What?! You want me to clean this entire rattletrap up all by myself?
In the next room, the ghosts almost explode with anger.
BUFFY
Don't have a mental breakdown here Cinderella. We'll be back in an hour.
FAITH
Yeah, whatever.
Buffy and Dawn walk out of the room and then out through the front door. Faith watches the through the window.
FAITH
These months are gonna be hell
In the next room, the ghosts are still listening.
GHOST 3 *whispers*

Buffy and Faith are entering city hall. It's quite a bit smaller than the Sunnydale city hall. The place is
pretty crowded however. There is an automated counter that tells whose turn it is. The counter says 765.
Buffy looks at her number.
DAWN
831?! We could be here all day!
BUFFY
So? You have somewhere to be?
DAWN
Well, you *did* tell Faith you'd be back in an hour
BUFFY
You don't actually believe that she's cleaning the place up, do you?
DAWN *smiles*
I guess not.... but you never know
Dawn quickly changes the subject.
DAWN *serious*
So.... what do you think the deal is with that house?
BUFFY
Well such a house doesn't go empty without a reason.
DAWN
So what if we don't find a reason?
BUFFY
*Then* I start worrying.
DAWN
You checked in with Giles yet?
BUFFY
No, he said he'd call when he arrived in London.
DAWN
Okay, does our phone work?
BUFFY
Huh?
DAWN *emphasizes*
Did you check if the phone works?
BUFFY

So Giles and the rest could be in London with no way to reach us?

Giles is sitting in a chair at the airport. His expression reveals that he is getting impatient. This is
not a Giles we very often. Suddenly, Xander sits down next to him. He seems more relaxed.
GILES
If those girls don't stop complaining to me...... I'm afraid my head might explode.
XANDER *suave*
My plan is already in motion
GILES *hopefull*
Our plane will take off?
XANDER
No... not for another six hours and fourty... three minutes. No I've guided them there
Xander points at a taxfree clothing store at the other side of the hall.
GILES
Thank the lord.
XANDER
You're awfully nervous today. You always seem so... British. What's up?
GILES
Those girls are draining the last energy just out me.
XANDER
....like they've been doing for what.... five months now? Now don't get me wrong, I'm *very* content with
them spending another hour... or two... in that store.... but this isn't about them, is it?
GILES
Don't be so insightful Xander, it's creepy
XANDER
Not being insightful here.... I feel the same way.
GILES *serious*
I wonder if we did the right thing in splitting up?
XANDER
Oh, Buffy can handle herself... she's lived without a watcher before.
GILES
But this time, it's not just me who left

Oh, come on G-man. It'll only be for a year or so.... and we'll talk regularly..... *beat* that is, if we ever get
to London.
Xander looks at Giles, who is not yet convinced about him doing the right thing.
XANDER
Look, there's no use in thinking about it over and over. Let's give them a try. If it doesn't work out there,
we can always consider another approach. Until then... stop worrying.
GILES *confused*

At the gang's house, Faith is carrying a large pile of junk. We see books, wood, papers and much more crap.
Faith walks through the front door, which is already open. She then throws the pile on the floor in the yard.
There is already a big pile of junk there. Faith looks at the pile for second.
FAITH
Where the hell *are* those deserters?
VOICE (O.S)
Uuuh, hi
Faith looks around and spots a goodlooking young man about ten feet away from her. She looks at the guy for a
second. He's about twenty years old, has short blonde hair and is wearing jeans and a blue shirt.
FAITH
Hey.... who are you?
MARK
Oh, I'm sorry. I'm Mark.... I live nextdoor.
FAITH *a little unfriendly*
Nextdoor? This place has no nextdoor.
MARK
I mean the house a couple of hundred yards away. The next one in the row.
FAITH
I'm Faith...... you mind telling me what you're doing here Mark?
MARK
Uh... just saying hi. Busy cleaning the place up?
FAITH *smiles*
Yeah, all this junk's gotta go. It looks like the place has been empty for some time
MARK
Yeah, more than ten years
FAITH
Thirteen.
MARK
Thirteen?
FAITH
Years. Thirteen years. There's expiration dates on the food.
MARK
Right..... You live here alone?
FAITH *smiles*
No, there's me, B and the kid.
Mark has a visibly dissapointed expression, but Faith doesn't notice it right away.
MARK
Oh, right. Well.... welcome to the neighbourhood. See you later!
With that, Mark walks off again, leaving Faith behind who is visibly clueless as to what she could have said
to drive him away so quickly.
FAITH *to herself*
Guys... you're all *so* weird.
Suddenly, realization sinks in with Faith.
FAITH *shouts*
What?! No, that's not what I meant!
Faith runs behind Mark, who is already out of sight.

When Buffy and Dawn come home, the pile of crap is about doubled. They stand outside looking at it.
Faith, meanwhile, is inside.
DAWN *casual*
Whoa. Check out the all the junk.
BUFFY *smiles*
I think we better help Faith
Buffy and Dawn go inside and spot Faith sitting in a chair and watching TV.
DAWN *surprised*
Hey, the TV works!
FAITH
Yeah, not bad for a dump that's been abandoned for so long.
Faith then turns to Buffy.
FAITH
So B, first things first, what'd you find out?
Buffy is pleasantly surprised that Faith doesn't give her a bunch of sarcastic remarks about how late they are.
BUFFY
Well.... the last owner was a man called 'van Halen'. He lived here for a few months and then left in a hurry.
FAITH
Any weird.... weirder stuff about this house?
BUFFY
Yeah, one thing. 156 years ago, five teenagers died here..... but there haven't been any deaths besides that so
it's probably not important.
FAITH
That's good...... you know, I met the guy nextdoor today
BUFFY
Nextdoor? There is no nextdoor.
FAITH *smiles*
No, I mean the house a couple of hundred yards away
BUFFY
Oh.... and?
FAITH
Friendly..... and most important, human.
Dawn immediately gets that Faith liked the guy.
DAWN *sarcastic*
Cute?
FAITH *smiles*
I suppose *some* people might call him cute.
BUFFY *smiles*
And are you 'some people'?
FAITH *awkwardly*
I... suppose.
BUFFY *sarcastic*

FAITH

BUFFY *smiles*

FAITH
Well, he's human..... so no.
Buffy smiles at this comment even though she's not really happy with Faith's comment.
Dawn quickly changes the subject.
DAWN
Sorry we're late
FAITH
You're not late. You're just in time to take over. I've cleared out all the junk.... as you saw. Your job
is to clean the place up. Cleaning stuff is under the sink. See ya.
Faith gets up out of her chair and walks a few steps towards the front door.
BUFFY
Faith, where are you going?
FAITH
Explore the town a little. Be back in an hour..... that is, one of your hours
With that, Faith walks outside. Buffy takes a few seconds to register what just happened.
BUFFY
Did she just tell us to clean this place?
DAWN
Uh.... yeah?
Buffy looks around the room. The place is a lot emptier but is still incredibly dirty.
BUFFY *beat*
She's evil again.
Dawn smiles. In the next room, the ghosts are listening in. They are also smiling.

That night, Buffy, Faith and Dawn are sleeping. Just like the previous night, the same two ghosts enter
Faith's bedroom.
GHOST 1 *whispers*
So what are we gonna do now?
GHOST 2 *whispers*
Geez, don't you *ever* listen? Watch and learn.
The second ghost puts his mouth to Faith's ear and whispers softly.
GHOST 2 *whispers*
They don't like you. They're just waiting for a chance to unload you. You're excess bagage. Don't kid
yourself. They pretend they like you, but they don't. They don't like you. They don't trust you.....
He keeps going like that for awhile longer. Meanwhile, the other ghost is not looking very happy.
In Buffy's room, one ghost enters. He positiones his mouth near Buffy's ear and starts whispering just
like the other ghost did to Faith.
GHOST 4 *whispers*
Do you really trust her? Is she any different than the killer she was before. You don't like her. She
doesn't like you. Do you really trust her with Dawn? Because one night, when she's in a bad mood,
she might grab a knife from the kitchen and kill her. Faith is a killer. Realize that.... She's no good
for anything besides killing. And Dawn... she's powerless to stop her... to stop anything.
The ghost keeps going like that. Now, we are in Dawn's room where another ghost enters. He takes the same
position with Dawn as the other ghosts did with Buffy and Faith.
GHOST 5 *whispers*
How do you fit in here? Two powerful slayers and a little kid. Yes, that's right... little kid, a child is
all you are... all you are to them. They don't want you here, they are stuck with you. Buffy did a good job
in making you believe that she wants you here, but she doesn't fool you. She wishes you stayed in London. And
Faith.... she's already thinking about beating the crap out of you to shut you up.
he also keeps going for awhile. Downstairs, ghost3 is standing at the bottom of the stairs, smiling.
GHOST 3 *whispers* *to himself*
I give them two days before they run away screaming.

The next morning, Dawn and Buffy are eating breakfast at the kitchen table when Faith comes down.
BUFFY *sarcastic*
There's sleeping beauty. You finally managed to pull yourself out of bed?
FAITH *annoyed*
Yeah. What's your point?
Faith sits down at the table and grabs a slice of bread.
BUFFY *calm*
No point
DAWN
So what are we gonna do today?
BUFFY
I figured we could get to know this town a little better
FAITH
Sure. What's the plan?
BUFFY
We check the local cemetaries for any undead activity.
FAITH
Sounds like a plan.
DAWN
When do we go?
BUFFY
Uh.... are you sure you wanna come with us?
DAWN
Uh... yeah.
BUFFY *a little reluctant*

Buffy smiles at Dawn.

Buffy, Faith and Dawn are walking through one of the local cemetaries.
FAITH *to Buffy*
This place sure is a lot like Sunnydale. This is the eleventh cemetary in this town.
BUFFY
Yeah... but we didn't see anything demony....
FAITH *excited*
...yet! I'm sure that if there's a hellmouth here, there's lots of creatures crawling around here.
BUFFY *sarcastic*
Let's keep hoping
FAITH
Come on B, spoiling the mood here. Patrol is boring if you don't find something demony to slay.
DAWN
I like it this way.... without the demons. No demons means no trouble, right?..... right?
Buffy hesitates for a few seconds. Buffy gazes through a window to the insides of a crypt. She spots several
people sleeping on the floor. Buffy keeps looking through the window.
BUFFY *whispers*
I think we have a nest here
Dawn stands next to Buffy and tries to catch a glimpse of the vampire. Faith holds her hands together and looks
at the sky.
FAITH *mimes*
Thank you
Faith walks towards Buffy and stands next to her.
FAITH *whispers* *hopefull*
We going in?
BUFFY *whispers* *to Faith*
Of course. That's why we're here
BUFFY *whispers* *to Dawn*
We're going in. You stay here.
DAWN *whispers*
What......No, I mean *what*?!
BUFFY

DAWN *sarcastic*

Buffy and Faith look at each other for a second. Realizing they don't really have a choice here, they shrug.
BUFFY
Remember.... if you die, I'm gonna kill you.
DAWN *ignorant*

BUFFY
Just be careful, alright?
DAWN

Buffy looks at Dawn with a questioning expression.
DAWN *embarassed*
Alright alright.... *almost* always
Buffy smiles and everyone takes that as the sign to start. All three of them grab a stake. Buffy violently
kicks the door in and all three of them rush in the crypt. One of the guys there seems to awake.
MAN *clearly drunk*
Whhh... whadda ya want?
Buffy grabs a cross from her coat and holds it against the drunk's face. He doesn't even blink.
FAITH *dissapointed*
Oh, you gotta be kidding!
MAN *drunk*
What?
BUFFY
Don't worry..... go back to sleep.
The man grumbles for a few seconds and then lays down to sleep. Buffy, Faith and Dawn walk outside.
DAWN
That was.... disturbing
BUFFY
You know, in Sunnydale, people napping in a crypt automatically meant vampires..... or dead bodies
FAITH
Well... this ain't Sunnydale.
DAWN (O.S) *soft*
Guys?
BUFFY
Come on Faith. Giles said that there was a hellmouth here, that's gotta attrackt demonic activity.
FAITH
Well, I don't see it.... and I'm trying *really* hard to see it
DAWN (O.S)

BUFFY
Something *has* to be wrong here.
DAWN *shouts*

BUFFY/FAITH
What?!
Buffy and Faith look at Dawn who is looking through another crypt. Inside the crypt are another couple of
people sleeping. We can't see if it's humans or vampires. Buffy and Faith take a look as well.
FAITH
They're probably humans
DAWN
How can you tell?...... Let me guess, it's a slayer thing
FAITH *sarcastic*
No, it's a common sense thing. With the shouting you did, any vampire in a three block radius would have
woken up. They didn't.
BUFFY
Well.... let's find out
Without hesitation, Buffy kicks the door to the crypt in. All five people wake up, but they keep sitting or
lying on the floor.
WOMAN *unfriendly*
What do you want?
FAITH *reluctant*
Just testing something
She grabs a cross from her coat and holds it against the woman's face. The woman does not respond to it.
FAITH *dissapointed*
Damn! Does someone up there hate me?
WOMAN
You're looking for vampires...... here?
Faith, Buffy and Dawn look shocked at the woman, surprised that she knows about vampires at all.
WOMAN
Well, you won't find them napping in a crypt
BUFFY
Then where are they?
WOMAN *sad*
Our houses
FAITH
A vampire can't come in unless you invite it in first
Another man stands up.
MAN
Well.... we didn't..... but they still come in.
BUFFY
How's that possible?
Both the man and the woman shake their heads to show that they don't know. But then, a kid who can't be
much older than six or seven, stands up.
KID
I saw a man with white hair
FAITH *soft*
Yeah that's... really helpfull
Dawn gives Faith a look and kneels down next to the kid so she's face-to-face with him.
DAWN *friendly*
And what did this man do?
KID
He talked strange and then he gave light
DAWN *friendly*
Then what happened?
KID
He went away and some of the bad people ran into the house. But one of them saw me and I had to run
DAWN *comforting*
Awww, don't worry. We'll stop the bad people.
WOMAN
So you.... stop vampires for a living?
BUFFY
More or less.
FAITH
More more, less less...... okay that sounded weird
DAWN
We are
BUFFY
Does any of you know where this man lives?
All of them shake their heads.
A few minutes later, Buffy, Dawn and Faith are outside the crypt again.
FAITH
So, let me understand this correctly.... this guy with white hair was casting a spell so vamps can enter
someones hoem without bieng invited?
BUFFY
That's what *I* got
DAWN
But we don't know where he is.
BUFFY

Buffy kicks the door in of a house across the cemetary. Very soon, two vampires come rushing downstairs with
their gameface on.
VAMPIRE
You're gonna wish you were never born
DAWN
That's lame
Without much efford, Buffy quickly stakes both vampires.
FAITH
Come on B, are you *trying* to bug me..... besides, didn't you wanna question them?
BUFFY
We have enough houses left.
All three of them leave and head for the next house.
BUFFY
Okay, your turn
Faith kicks down the door and runs inside

Faith, Buffy and Dawn are looking at a big mansion from a distance. It's night now.
DAWN
So... that's where the guy lives? It looks even more spooky than our place
BUFFY
Let's hit it tomorrow
FAITH *surprised*
What?! Why?
BUFFY
Well.... this guy is helping out vampires.... so my guess is..
DAWN
That he's a vampire too?
BUFFY
...in which case I'd like the advantage of the sun shining when we attack. We don't know what we're up against.
Buffy and Dawn walk away and Faith reluctantly follows them.
